<p>Z16 was the RPO code for the performance package on the C6 Grand Sport. I think this "Guy" misunderstood what he was seeing.</p><p> </p>
I think the current corvette and zo6 are doing well on their own, a z16 might show up when sales slow.
When that happens they will do what they did last time, hang z06 fenders on a stock corvette, toss in a dry sump and call it z16.
You forgot to mention the Z51 package(springs, shocks, gearing) that is included in all Grand Sports and it's hard to miss the Z06 brakes, wheels and tires that are found on every Grand Sport.
The GS is not just a stock corvette with wide fenders replacing the skinny fenders found on the base C6.
The GS was never referred to as a Z16 as the RPO Z16 was just one of many RPO's found in the Grand Sport, just as the GS was never referred to as a Z51, and every GS had the RPO Z51 included.
Anyone have any information on a Z16 being built at Bowling green and released to the public? Guy said he saw one on the line last week. True or not?
Guy probably saw a Z06 emblem but mistook it as Z16.
Some people aren't to observant. I had one guy ask if my C6 Z06 was a Ferrari and another asked if my 1956 Corvette was an early Camaro. At a convenience store(way out in the boonies) in Colorado, one guy asked if a 2014 C7 Stingray in our group was the new Viper.

You wonder how some of these people make it thru the day!

I get why non car people mistake the C7 for a Ferrari . The front end in particular shares a lot of Ferrari DNA. The headlights for example are almost identical to the F12 Berlinetta. Although as you move back it becomes more and more Corvette.
It will be interesting if it turns out the guy really did spot spot a Z16 fender badge. Over the last 50 years Chevrolet has used Z16 numerous times. including recent Grand Sports but also the 04 Z06 with the CF hood, the 96 GS, the rare 65 big block Malibu, and the lightweight 409's.
With this history in mind the Z16 could be a lightweight track
package including more CF body parts. Maybe at the Bash in April they'll have something to say about it.

.
What lightweight 409's?
I'm familiar with the 1963 lightweight Impala for NASCAR with the aluminum front fenders, hood, bumpers, etc, but it had a 427 cu in and it was a Z11.
I was stationed in Wichita, KS at the time and guy who worked at Boeing had one that was his street car daily driver. In no time at all, it looked terrible as people didn't realize how soft the body parts were and would lean on them etc, bending them. He went to Quality Chevrolet(where he bought the car) a year or so later and tried to buy new fenders etc, but Chevrolet told him no deal on replacement aluminum parts and he would have to settle for the regular steel parts.
The other Chevy dealer in Wichita had one of the 1965 Malibu SS coupes with the 375 HP 396 cu in that was a Z16.
Even in 1978, the Z16 RPO was used. It was a "Sport Décor/Black Knight" option.

...As rare as the 1963 Z11 W-series 427 lightweights were, the 1962 409 lightweights were even rarer. They had 409 engines; the code for the aluminum hood, bumper, and fenders was Z16. Both were intended more for drag racing as I recall.
Thanks for the reminder about the Z16 Black Knight! I knew there was another Z16 trim option somewhere, maybe more, but forgot all about the Black Knight .
