Default Splash Guards

Got the splash guards I ordered from Cultrag the other day....(Got the special Labor Day discount) I installed them this morning....took about 30 seconds per wheel. I was wondering WHY GM doesn't put them on to begin with. I have had to buy aftermarket splash guards for my last 3 vettes (C5...C6 and now my C7) I am sure I am not alone with this.

Why would they include something they can charge you extra for?

More seriously, I'm sure there are plenty of buyers who don't want anything sticking out past the fenders.

You are probably right about charging extra....BUT...the splash guards MIGHT stick out MAYBE an 1/8 inch if that but protect the lower part of the fender for those of us that don't have garage queens and actually drive our vettes....However, I do see your point...some like to keep their vette completely stock.

The Chevy dealer on ebay sells the same GM splash guards, and they are shipped free.

I was going to buy them at cultrag but why should I pay tax and shipping, even with the LD sale discount they were more.

A little more serious thought on the cost / profit aspect. Obviously there are lots of things on the C7 that Chevy includes stock that could be extra cost add-ons. So there's some balance between reducing cost and adding features. How does GM make that decision?

For many products, it's about what add-ons will increase desirability, and therefore sales, by enough to justify the extra cost. GM could have a cheap basic stereo as standard, and make the Bose an option. That would let them reduce the base price a bit. But they've probably calculated that having the Bose name on the stereo attracts enough positive attention to make it worth the cost.

But I suspect making the splash guards standard would bring approximately zero extra sales. No one's going to say, "Oh, hey, nice touch." when they're looking at the splash guards in the showroom.

Everything that goes on the car undergoes some level of cost / benefit analysis, and if the benefit (to GM, not the buyer) doesn't outweigh the cost, it isn't going on.

Some of it is much simpler

Take Rates and Manufacturing Complexity. It ALWAYS costs more money to have choice. If 80%+ of the people take an option on a car, and it's not something that prevents people from buying the car, then it becomes standard.

I put splash guards on mine and after installing them the first thing I thought was that there is absolutely no good reason to not have those on there from the factory.

Splash guards not a big deal ..... jacking pucks and a decent paint job is what we should get STANDARD ...no extra charges and if you want the STANDARD ROOF you should be able to get or at least a credit ..

It's a racket. You can get a standard roof, but will just potentially have to wait months longer to get it, or you can pay them an extra $1000 for the optional glass roof that costs less than a painted roof if you buy it from the parts dept. It's like paying graft to a corrupt politician to get something you want.

I've thought about getting splash guards, but it hardly ever rains in San Diego (maybe 5-6 days a year).

Do they really help keep your car stay cleaner- even in areas that don't have much rain or loose rocks/gravel?

Who knows - for me it's the "well, maybe they might prevent a chip and they're only a few bucks in the grand scheme of things and they look OK so why not".

I put them on a few days after taking delivery. I haven't seen any splash behind them at all. I do have a non Z51 car which I've heard makes a difference due to the larger tires on cars equipped with that package.

I just bought a set from Gene and could not be happier with them.
They look oem; very easy to install, and yes, since I put them on 3 months after I got the car, the lower fender area stays much cleaner.

a very good mod....
