Default Auto Shifter Boot Replacement

I would like to change the shifter boot in my C7 to a different color. Does this require removing the console or just the shifter ****? Any help is much appreciated.

According to the service manual, the boot and shifter **** for the automatic are removed as a unit...
Release the tabs around the base of the boot to release it from the console, then lift up and twist the ****.

I guess if you are just going to replace the boot, it will be obvious when you get the **** off how to separate it from the boot.

Like on the manual cars, the boot is connected with a locking ring that is stapled to the boot...

Just replaced my center consul not too long ago. Once you disconnect it you will lift it up slightly to release the tabs as mentioned in the post about for the shift boot. That is as far as I went though If you have an automatic I believe you just compress the shift **** as if you were putting it into gear and pull straight up in order to remove the shifter. Good luck!

This is a video showing removing the console with a stick but it's close enough for the A8.
