Default Oil consumption

I presently own a 2015 M7 Z51 and have had no need to add oil to the vehicle between oil changes (of which I have only had one). However, I have a friend with a 2014 non Z51 who is adding up to Three Quarts of oil between 5000 Miles changes! The dealership told him it was within normal requirements.

doesn't this sound excessive for pleasure drives?

I have 8k miles on my '14 non-Z51, have had two oil changes, and haven't added any between the changes. Three quarts over 5k miles is definitely excessive oil usage.

Sounds excessive to me for sure he has 11K miles on the vehicle. No leaks. I told him to pull the air filter to see if any oil is spitting into the intake but outside of that I wouldn't know what to suggest other than take it to another dealership.

Most manufacturers will try to say that 1 quart per 1000 miles is "acceptable". In reality, even that level is too high. Your friend definitely needs to take it to the dealer and have them perform an oil usage test. He needs to get this documented.

Its more like one quart in 1000 miles that is normal.

Have the oil consumption documented and continue to operate vehicle. Wouldn't surprise me that the engine will go the distance without needing major surgery. I had an engine in the past that used about a quart every thousand miles, at 80,000 miles (when I traded) there was no change in performance or oil consumption.

I would estimate in 2K I loose about 1/2 a quart, that oil can be accounted for because I take it out of the catch can.

I change oil once a year, the level never seems to go down enough so you would notice it.

My 2014 Z51 has just over 16000 miles on it. 7,800 of that were the previous owner. I have changed it once at about 11,000. So now, after 5,000 miles since the oil change, oil life is down to about 30% but usage, whatever it may be, is too low for me to notice on the dipstick.

Just looked up spec's in Service Manual Section 9 page 541 of volume II and it says 1 quart or more in 2000 miles is excessive oil consumption, not due to any leaks
