Yes. I have the EXACT SAME problem with a stock apple cable. I've complained to my local dealer, they have no idea what I'm talking about. If you find out a different answer please let me know. I hate this one thing about the car.
I ordered a couple cables off Ebay. They work pretty well but every once in a while I have to unhood the cable from the USB port behind the screen and reattach it. Other than that I am having no trouble with my Ipod Touch 4th gen. I was unable to get my ipod classic to work well in the C7 so I use it in my Audi and it works fine. Try another cable. Then ones I ordered off ebay came from China but so far they work pretty well and they were really cheap, less than $3 as I recall.

I used a couple different cables, all of them have the same problem!!
How are you people playing your music?? I know its not the iPod bc it works perfect in my other car.
Probably not the answer you want, but ordered my C7 months before they started production. Saw there was no CD so bought a hi end iPod. Had similar issues so stored songs on SD cards. In fact, since I was listening to the free XM, mostly 50's, 60's and 70's made one SD card with ~500 Oldies and didn't renew the service. It starts playing in shuffle mode when I start the car. No back sides of old hits playing like XM! A larger SD card holds most of the CD's I have. Found voice command is easiest way to access a specific song.
FWIW
changing songs manually or through the infotainment screen?
how many songs?
Mine takes significant amounts of time to search, but I have about 8000 tracks on a 120gb classic.
I eventually figured out how to supress the warning, but I used to get the "you have too many songs to search by name warning" every time I connected.
I'm guessing the system cannot hold the index in memory, so has to reindex every time you want to change songs.
It's weird that so many are having problems with IPods. I have a late model Classic (160 GB), with a total of around 1100 albums. Works like a charm, other than an occasional crash from overheating in the console.

I had periodic issues with my ipod Classic in my C7 but it works fine in my Audi A6. I bought a refurbished ipod touch 4th Gen and it works pretty well in my C7. Occasionally I have to reboot it by unplugging the USB cable but I am able to search for songs as well as all of my playlists.
