SafeLite horror story

SafeLite horror story
My windshield on my 2015 Z51 got hit by a rock on November 21st, crack formed and spread on windshield. First Safelite ordered the wrong off brand windshield, they finally ordered the correct OEM windshield which just came in today....six weeks after the crack happened. They began installing it today and called me up 2.5 hours into the install to inform me they had put a two inch crack in the pinch weld. So I called Stingray Chevrolet and they are sending a flatbed out to Safelite tomorrow morning and will hopefully be installing the windshield themselves. Even more pathetic, Safelite is telling my insurance company they can't give the new windshield to Stingray to install because they paid for it and they aren't installing it now. Safelite actually ordered this windshield from Stingray in the first place and my insurance company wouldn't let Stingray install it because insurance companies like Safelite because they're cheap. When I asked the Safelite tech what the next step was after he told me about the broken pinch weld...he said that he would "have to do some research on that"...so this is when I made the phone call to Stingray. Does anyone know what a pinch weld is and how bad Safelite may have fu@#$d up my car?

Someone on here might, but I don't. You might ask someone at Stingray since they do know their stuff about Corvettes. Good luck with it. So much for Safelite.

I worked for an auto glass distributor for 9 years... I can't say it enough that Safelite is know as hacks, they have their own brand of cheap auto glass. If anyone has a glass claim insist on OEM glass. By the way the dealer isn't going to be doing the install, they are going to be having a local mobile glass installer do the work. Odds are they will most likely do a better job then Safelite.. Good luck!

This is depressing since my insurance company, USAA, also uses Safelite. I have had numerous satisfactory repairs completed by them but no replacements. I have a small chip now but have no plans to have my oem windshield replaced especially after reading this post.

You are right, they will be having an installer come to the dealership to do it, however they know the installer and they will be personally overseeing the job...ie no scratches on paint, leather, cracks in windshield...etc. They are also sending out a particular flatbed company who specifically moves their exotics they sell...Lambos, Ferraris,...etc to get my car from Safelite, because I know you don't load corvettes same way you would a normal car due to the height dimensions. I can't say enough good things about Stingray, I just never expected to need them to deal with this. My insurance company has gotten an earful, wouldn't allow Stingray to do the install and now that my car is messed up they agreed to let them do the install...pathetic.

Ditto what everyone is saying about Safelight. I own a large collision shop and absolutely will not let them in my shop. We use a locally owned glass install company that is not a franchise nor do they have "special" deals with insurance co's. I force the ins. cos to pay period, how, that's another story. Just a thought if your company doesn't want to pay. Get yourself in a rental car if you have the coverage or get SL to pay while yours is down until this mess is over. They hate paying daily charges. Or, ask to see the special deal contract they have with Safelight so your legal counsel can review. There trying to hold you to that special deal then you or your dealer should know all the details. Be a big pain in the ***!
Even though the GM dealer is installing it MAKE SURE the new glass has similar stamping numbers on the glass as the original. Although there are some OE manufactures that don't sell OE glass not sure which ones, getting late! Make sure they use the exact urethane bonder that GM requires and the exact cure time and temps. A water leak test should be performed before all the trim is reinstalled.
The pinch weld as the video above shows is the metal frame where the glass sets. This known as part of the A pillar is a structural part of your cars chassis. As they said they split the pinch weld. Probably means they cut with the knife between the two pieces of high strength steel. Not familiar with how these two pieces are bonded together by GM but most likely either spot welded or a bonding glue. Just make sure if any of these were compromised the area is reattached as it was.
Good luck and get involved in the repair process is always best.

Sorry for all the trouble members here have had with Safelite. I've had windshields replaced by them on two C4s, a C6, and now my C7 - all quality repairs....

I'm sure it won't be my last windshield but if/when I need another, I'd want OEM if available but I would not hesitate to use my local Safelite again.
Sorry the OP had so many issues. Like anything else, I guess it depends on the shop doing the work too.

Safelight replaced a windshield on my C6 in our driveway and they appeared to be quite professional so it is sad that they screwed it up for you. I have had some other outfits replace windshields in other cars and the methods they used to remove the old glass were very crude.

Good luck getting the windshield installed properly and with no damage.

Took Safelite 3 attempts to get it right on wife's BMW 535 with HUD. Safelite glass presented an out of focus HUD image. After numerous calls to Safelite supervisors, they finally got BMW OEM glass and third try was a charm. Last year, needed new windshield on my '14 Stingray - -went directly to Chevy - - -took a month to get the glass, but install and result is perfect.

My sons girlfriend in Orlando had her windshield replaced by Safelite and they scratched the roof of the car during installation and the new windshield leaked. They took responsibility for the problems but they wouldn't pay for a rental while the roof was being repainted. Plus, she had to point out to them that they damaged the roof.

I used them for a "star type" rock chip repair a week or so ago. You may have seen the thread on it, but it was amazing. You can't even tell there was anything there. I guess I was lucky.
