Default M7 second gear comment and question

This is my 3rd manual since 07 and the 1-2 shift is still rough, the colder it is the rougher the shift. My question, is it bad to start out in second gear from a stand still?

I wouldn't do it if it were mine, but if your going to do it a lot, be gentle about it.

I don't do it all the time, but it got me thinking if it puts any excess stress on the clutch .

No problem what so ever if you do it gentile and relatively level start...Won't hurt anything. The gearing and power to weight makes it little stress on anything.

It's not really "stress," but the more you slip the clutch the more clutch wear there is, and the sooner it will wear out. The LT has enough torque that if you give it some more throttle you can probably start out in second without too much slip. It may be a bit more abrupt, though. Try it and see.

Depending on how much you slip the clutch you could do some harm. I would not do it and even though the shift from 1st to 2nd is a bit clunky when cold you do get used to it.

Sometimes that cold shift to second makes me cringe a little. I guess it's just a characteristic of the tranny.

I've had three stick Corvettes and they all three nibbled when cold on the 1-2....many times I started out first couple starts in two to give it a chance to warm up..another tip is to make sure you get the clutch on the floor that first few shifts...

If you want a little stress on the clutch try the launch control....

No, if you can drive at all skip the LC....Its not as good on ours like it is on the Porsche where you can do it all day long over and over and not hurt anything...

Someone who's starting in 2nd gear....

But, seriously, EVERY start involves slipping the clutch unless you believe it goes from 0% engagement to 100% engagement instantly. When you have one plate spinning at engine rpm, and another plate not spinning at all, there's going to be slippage and wear as they come together. Even if you sidestep the clutch pedal, there's slippage between the plates as the two plates engage.

When cold, I just gently blip the engine between the 1-2 shift and it goes in slick as a whistle. Not a double clutch as I leave the clutch depressed. After the first couple shifts, all is good.

That's 460 hp, and unless you are dumping the clutch you are. If you don't like 2nd just let skip shift take you to 4th.

Here is my solution to the stock shifter issues. It feels better now that it ever has, even in the cold temps. I couldn't he happier with the stock shifter assembly now. No grinds or notchiness at all anymore.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...7-shifter.html

Next up is some Redline D4 ATF just to see what difference, it any, it makes.

Rather than start in second it would be better to start in first, skip second, and just go to third.

This is what I did in around town driving with my C6 Grand Sport 6 speed. My C7 has the A8: I just let it do what it wants. If I feel playful I reach for the paddles.

Thanks for posting that. I'm not having any particular problems with my shifter, but that looks like a cheap and simple way to make it better. I do have a question, which I posted in that thread, if you don't mind taking a look there.

Might also try increasing your RPM's on that 1st to 2nd shift. Find the sweet spot. See if that helps.
Good luck!

I was thinking of this, good to hear your recommendation.

I will on occasion start out in 2nd gear, at times I also will shift directly to third gear from first.

Someone on another thread suggested double clutching when cold. I tried it and it works great.
