Default C7 Gas Lid WON'T OPEN!

Ill ask here since you guys seem more knowledgeable than the dealership most of the time..

2015 C7 less than 5000 miles. I just got it over the weekend. Going to fill it up for third time. No previous problems. Open up my door press the gas cap it will not open. Made sure doors where unlocked fob is in steering column. Car is not in valet mode or anything. Tried to get gas cap to open it will not open... Looked on youtube/in manual and called local GMC dealership they went over the same steps I already did. You can hear a unclicking sound when I unlock coming from the gas cap. But the damn thing will not open/budge.

Luckily I was close to home. But now its sitting in my garage on dead empty.... Any suggestions before I get it towed the chevy dealership?

I wanna make sure im not missing anything.

Ever since reading about the first occurrence of this ... I blocked the hole in the fuel door to make sure it never locks.

Thanks sometimes simplicity is the best. C6 was fine in with the gas cap. Never had issue with my c6.... never had a car where the gas lid locked. Never had anyone siphor gas and you cant out of modern tanks right? And if someone wants to mess up your vehicle locking that door isnt gonna stop them. Just more junk to tear up and be a pain in the ***. Thanks GM. Keep it simple stupid is sometimes good advice.

Sorry youre having a problem. Lots of info on this in forum. Your going to need servo replaced.IMO a very bad design. Just had mine replaced after l realized it was nonoperative only in my case broken in an open position.I had to think twice given failure in closed much worse. Many here think blocking pin movement is safe but given opening force of pin I'm not so sure over time.being compulsive about a normally functioning car I chose to have it replaced.just haven't blocked it yet.fortunately job appears to have been done correctly without any collateral damage or misadventures at the deal if u know what I mean!

Why do you put your fob in the steering column? That is totally unnecessary. Mine stays in my pocket at all times.

I have had the same intermittent fuel door problem, when it happens to me I push the fob unlock button and the fuel door then always opens.
BTW, I have my door locks set to manual lock, I stop to get fuel, shut off the engine, close the door, then intermittently the fuel door will either stay locked, or, open up when pressed in.

I previously had three C6's that always worked flawlessly when pushing the fuel door unlock button on the dash. My DD Infiniti has the same fuel door "push to unlock" and has worked perfectly for over three years.

What did you use to block it?

Yes .. its a push pop door .. acts just like it did before when car was unlocked .. just now its always unlocked because it blocks the solenoid from engaging the locking pin.

I just grabbed whatever small xmas tree style fastener I had in my tool box .. it did not fit tight enough so I wrapped a couple of layers of electrical tape around the the pin to increase the diameter and pushed it in tight.

I have the right size fastener to fit the hole, but still wonder if blocking the plunger will end up causing problems with the solenoid long term.
When the plunger is extended, it does not push in easily... just enough travel where the door will close, but does not really feel spring loaded.

I am still considering running my own manual release line to the edge of the wheel well, or just removing the solenoid.

I have no concerns about the solenoid .. if it was simple procedure I would just remove the solenoid completely since I don't car about a locking door. It still clicks and clacks when you unlock or lock the car ... which is annoying in itself.

It's no harder to siphon gas out of a modern tank than any other, as long as you can snake a hose down the filler neck.

I've had other cars with electric gas cap releases, but ALL of them had a manual release hidden in the trunk in case the electric one failed. Stupid of GM not to provide that.

My C7 stays in a garage at night, so I'm not worried about getting siphoned normally. About the only time I'd worry about it is if I drive to visit my brother or sister, neither of whom have garages. I supposed I could put a plug in, and just pull it out on the rare occasions I have to park the car outside over night.

This is the size pin I used. The shaft is just the right size for a snug fit. Trimmed the head to a rectangular shape with a utility knife:

So my question is why not simply just cut the pin off ? With it in the extended position, a side cutters or Dremel tool it should be an easy task.

Wasn't aware of the potential problem until I read this thread. Did the "mod" this afternoon. Thanks!

I just blocked it. I figure if the solenoid fails, oh well I have to replace it. If it doesn't, remove the plug and it's all back to stock. It would still make the annoying click even if you cut it off.

Mine locked up when 3 months old just before a long trip planned, lucky! I unscrewed the left rear wheel liner with the tire on mostly front area screws. Reached up inside with pliers and bent the locking rod out from the hole. It will never happen again! What a cheap POS!

This was a design when gas prices were 3 and 4 per gallon now a buck and a half who cares! I would have the GM dealer disconnect the mechanism for those that cant do it themselves or plug the hole. Think about the situations you could get into if it fails.
