Default 2014 C7 Engine overheating

Have 21k miles on my c7 z51. Drove about 20 miles yesterday and I sat in the parking garage of my school for a minute or two and noticed all the sudden the AC was blowing hot air. Looked at the center dash and saw that the engine temp was at 255-260 (in the red basically) and it stated that “Engine Overheating Idle Engine” So I turned off the car and and headed to class for a couple hours. Came back and turned it on and took it straight to the dealer with no problems, checking carefully to see if the Engine temp would rise.

Anybody know why my engine overheated? Has this happened to anybody else on this forum?

When it overheats while stationary the first thing you should check (even before shutting it off) is whether the electric engine cooling fan is running. It should be screaming at full speed under these conditions and it is good to check this in case it is an intermittent problem that may not show up at the dealer.

There have been a few reports of overheat from the cap not fitting/sealing properly to the coolant tank resulting in air in the system and resultant overheating. I believe all of these cases were 2014 model year cars.

Thanks for the response, I didn't check to see if the cooling fan was still running but I just got an email from my service advisor saying that they ordered a water pump housing which was the problem.

My 2014 was getting up to at 240 deg in the summer temp out side was in hi 95 to 103 deg's. Dealer was telling me that was ok, I got me a new DeWitts rad put it in myself also put in a 170 deg and pulled out the 190 are what ever stock was. Plus I put in Evans 100% coolant in the car.

After this my car same temp outside in the 190 deg temp's now. Same stock fans in the car. The factor rad is a joke in these cars to the Dewitt and others have for the car. Robert

Its a known fact the evans 100 coolant product will actually show a higher coolant temp on the guage than a 50/50 mixture of GM spec antifreeze.

It's really hard to imagine what could go wrong to the water pump housing at 21K miles that would cause the engine to overheat. I'm thinking...

I don't know about what you are saying here on it. But you use 100% of the Evans coolant no water at all. It is good for over 40 deg below zero. Plus they told me never have to chg it out in the car.

I do know the stuff is not cheap by no means. But will not do nothing bad on the inside of the rad. I will check it ever year to make sure. Robert

What're you saying, my service advisor is lying? He said that they ordered a new water pump housing and it'll be here in 5 days. I've never had any problems with him and he's a great guy tbh from what I've seen.

i would generally agree water pump housing problem at 21000 miles

is rather strange ..but with the problems this car has ...anything is possible ..

would not suggest owning a C7 out of warranty ...

so you are without a car 5 days .... or are they giving you a C7 as loaner .....

I was 2nd owner of my vette, bought with 1.8k miles on it a year and a half ago. Never had any kind of problem like this before.

They gave me a 2016 Silverado Texas edition brand new basically with 8 miles, all they had but he said if you want a suburban we can get you one in a couple of days but I'm fine with it for now till my car gets fixed

My 2014 overheated two times at around 30,000 miles. They could not find a problem or recreate the issue the first time I brought it in.

The second time it happened they indicated the thermostat was bad and replaced it. No issues since and I was in some bumper to bumper traffic in 95 degree heat with no issues. It has been 9,000 miles and no issue since.

Maybe they call the entire water pump assembly a housing, but even that's a stretch. The assembly would consist of the housing, the pump, and maybe the thermostat. The thermostat can probably be changed without changing the housing.

Changing the pump would probably mean changing the housing, but it seems like the engine would overheat every time the car was driven if the pump was really bad.

Regardless, I'm glad you have a dealer you feel comfortable will fix the problem for you.
