The "i" just sits there, to tell you you're in Info mode. Nothing useful ever gets displayed there. It's a total waste of screen real estate, and I can't believe GM thought it was OK to just wasted a third of the screen that way.
In some modes, you'll see a white StingRay in that space, instead. It's also totally devoid of useful information.
