Parked and put my phone in console to hide it and charge -did not feel any heat from there when I did that.
Oh returned about 3 hrs later took phone out and it was hot and so was the compartment- and as I was looking at it a "high temp warning " came on! So put took off back and held phone under ac vent which cooled it down enough to work.
Point is I was caught off guards that the console would get that hot and still be hot 3 hrs later!
This is hot enough to damage a expensive phone
I think I was lucky to catch this before me phone was damaged
Has any one else noticed this ?
Is this normal or should it be checked out ?
What could cause this ?
Ugh is there a warning about this some place?

Your phone itself generates significant heat when charging so that added to the heat in the compartment. In general charging most modern devices in an enclosed space is a bad idea. The charging process is far from 100% efficient so there is a lot of heat developed and because we like the convenience of fast charging this heat buildup is time compressed and far greater than it was with the "trickle" charge systems common with nickel cadmium batteries of years past.

Couple that charging heat with the heat coming in from under the console and overheating will likely be an issue.

They talked about the expensive Aerogel foam in the console but like any insulation it reduces the time it takes for heat to flow but doesn't stop it. As I recall it is only 1/2 inch thick (google if you want more info on the product.)
In time the console compartment gets hot. Would not keep a chocolate bar there!
In the OP's case as folks pointed out it was the charging that caused the heat and the Aerogel helped keep the heat it generated in the console!
I noticed the same with my c7 as well as my c6. Both have excessive heat from the center console I believe is due to the design of these vehicles. The heat source is obviously coming from from either the engine, headers,
or some other component located under the console. In my c6 grand sport convertible I forgot I left a half eaten Hershey chocolate bar in the center console which was liquified and you can imagine the mess. When I'm done driving my car I help cool the engine compartment by opening the hood and center console cover for a few hours while parked in my garage. This also helps with cooling the interior.
The USB in the console charges too fast for my liking. Good for a quick charge when needed, but not good for battery life, or apparently the phone. I was using the USB port because the sound was much better than Bluetooth, but after leaving it in for a while, my phone was cooking. The base of the console was never that hot, just the phone.

Below is a pic of the bottom of a C7. You can see the two exhaust pipes that are on either side of the driveshart assembly. The bottom of the console is directly above that. (That is why we have such little depth to the cup holders etc!)
That is where the heat is coming from.
Exhaust Pipes Are Close to Console Bottom. Aerogel Insulation Helps But It Still Gets HOT!
The console USB ports are NOT powered with the ignition off. The only accessory port that is powered at all times is the 12V "lighter plug" at the right rear of the cargo area. So - all of the heat was from the exhaust system - which is normal.
Never ever charge a lithium battery in a small closed space!!! AS an airline Captain I regularly refused to put those in the cargo hold. At least three fatal airplane crashes blamed on lithium overheating a stating fires until
they were just recently banned.

so who improperly lifted this car. ??? Look at the right side NO pucks and WRONG points!!!

Good observation! Those pics were when the C7 1st came out and Edmond's did a review! Their pics. Since I am sensitive to jacking properly noticed that as well!

I have found the same to be true with my iPhone 6. So now I use the same center console USB but set the iPhone in the cup holder, it gets warm, but not so hot it shuts down like in the console.
The console is never hot unless the phone is plugged in, and inside.

LiOn batteries of any capacity are very volatile and sensitive to charging
and environmental changes. I have seen what happens when they fail and would NEVER charge them in the console compartment.
