Oil Consumption
I was losing ~3/4qt/1000 and had the valve seals replaced. This reduced consumption to ~1/2qt/1000. I broke in the car as prescribed and drive it relatively hard. I use ARV all the time and engine brake. The car is rarely below 2000RPM. I think with DI cars it's really the luck of the draw. Some commenters imply that oil consumption doesn't/shouldn't happen in 2016, but that's ridiculous. If anything, oil consumption is on the upswing with DI engines. Everybody from Toyota to BMW is experiencing it. Me? I'm monitoring, but not worried about it.
The reason for posting is a very interesting 4 page article I read yesterday in the June/July 2016 issue of Fabricating & Metalworking mag. It is all about cylinder finishing and honing and quotes Nick Ferri who is an engine builder for Elite Performance (where Erica Enders has won the 2015 and prior ProStock NHRA Championship.) Not going to try to repeat what was said about his cylinder wall honing procedures, which is what the 4 pages are about, but quoting this one statement: "I prefer to have the rings take off most of the surface peaks during the first pull (referring to the 1st dyno pull.) I believe it optimizes our seal-up."
It says Ferri started his engine building career in 1986. Frankly was surprised it provided as much detail as it does. It was obviously written with the help of Sunnen Products who make the honing equipment!
This reinforces some other articles that state it is the first few miles that make the difference! Some articles about racing motorcycle engine break-in procedures also relate to the initial dyno operation. Guess I missed all the opportunity to use an aggressive break-in procedure with the easy 150 mile drive from the dealer to my home! Obviously it did no harm! Just Sayn'!
