After owning 5 Corvettes over some 49 years, it finally happened. My windshield was cracked by a stone kicked up by a driver in front of me that was distracted by something that cause him/her to drive off the paved road onto the shoulder, then back on the road. It hit EXACTLY where the windshield meets the molding even with the steering wheel. The crack was immediate. The reason for my post is how the Corvette Museum Insurance People handled it. It was Immediate!! Told me to find a glass company to replace it and everything would be handled by them. Of course I am getting a OEM replacement but what I found out was that the windshield is set up for rain sensing that is supposed to turn on the wipers automatically. I cannot find anything in the owners manual about that. I questioned the glass company and they said my VIN called for that windshield as well as a HUD. They ordered the windshield from a Chevy dealer and it will be delivered in 5 business days or less.
My understanding of GM rainsense wipers is that they don't need any special windshield to operate. They use an optical sensor mounted in contact with the inside of the windshield. They project infrared light at a 45 degree angle. If the windshield is dry, most of that light is reflected back to the sensor. Drops on the windshield cause the light to be reflected in different directions. If the amount of reflected light falls below a certain level, the wipers activate.
Sorry about the cracked windshield, but glad the insurance is taking care of you. Just curious, what glass company are you using?
No, he said he is getting an OEM replacement. You can get an OEM replacement windshield at any number of auto glass service companies. I want to know who is going to be doing the replacement work. Safelite, Binswanger, etc.

It is a local company called Glass Pro's, located in Clearwater, FL that was recommended by 3 different Chevy Dealers in my area. They have a mobile service but will only do Corvettes in their shop. Even the largest Corvette Dealer in Florida, Stingray Chevy uses outside vendors to replace windshields.
They don't stock any OEM windshields but instead have to order them from the various dealers they do business with. In my case it was from
Auto Nation which is just up the street from them. BTW that Auto Nation Chevy Dealer is one of the largest Chevy Parts supplier in the Tampa Bay area and they had to order the Windshield from the GM parts Depot. The reason they gave was that they didn't want them hanging around where they might get damaged as they were so expensive. In any case, it is going to take at least a week for it to be replaced.

Misunderstood your query. Was assuming you wanted to know where the glass was coming from.
Good luck my dealer went through 7 windshields before we got one that didn't have damage. The damage was coming from the shipping company as they are packed in wooden crates with packing around the windshield. Be sure you check it out before they install it.

I agree. GM windshield replacement was ordered Nov 10. Windshield received Dec 30. First 2 were broken.

Thank you...I went to the Shop that was going to do the installation to check it out. It looked like a hospital operating room and made me feel very good. The OWNER told me they have done many C7's and not to be upset if they can't do it under MY timetable because they have had bad luck in getting an undamaged windshield from the dealer. Like your post said...the FIRST 2 WERE BROKEN...he found the same problem. And, because of that they check the replacement over very carefully and if they find the SLIGHTEST damage/defect they send it back. One good thing is the windshields are easy to get now...no more than a 5 business day delivery and in some cases, he said, quicker. I did tell him that I was going to remove the wipers and cowl before I brought it to him and he said FINE if that is what I wanted to do.

That same company replaced my windshield at Stingray Chevrolet after Safelite royally messed it up. That company is great, you shouldn't have any problems at all.
