Default Oil level a bit high....

I have a new Z51 stingray with 100 miles on it. Checked the oil level -- two different times -- and it is a tad above the top dot (i.e., just past the hash marks). Should I remove some oil?

Don't think it should be a problem since a new motor will use a little oil during break-in.
I only have 90 miles on mine and haven't checked the oil yet.

I'm pretty sure you will be alright.
If it really concerns you stop by the dealer and have them do it, this will document the overfill in the event that something were to happen down the road.

Did you follow the correct steps to check the oil in a dry sump system?

Yes. On two different occasions. Got the temp up, then waited 5-10 mins.

I should add that the only reason I'm even asking -- normally I wouldn't care -- is that several people have mentioned oil ingestion problems when oil levels are too high.

It's a fine line between wisdom and paranoia....

I'm surprised it came a tad high from the factory, but like they said you'll be fine. 500 miles goes quick.

Mine came overfilled from the factory, luckily no damage.
I now have the Corvette Tech fill with 9 qts. of MOBIL 1, give me the extra quart. Done this twice so far, didn't need to fill any more ounces.
9.8 quarts says the manual, I'd never put that much in.

Per the GM Bulletin requiring an oil change at 500 miles in dry sumps ONLY, is silicone from new seals gets into the oil and pleats the anti-foam additives. That causes foaming IF the engine is run at high speeds. A higher level in the dry sump tank makes that more probable.
If you don't want to lower the oil level now, keep the rpms lower and particularly don't sustain higher rpm's. Shouldn't do that in break in anyway. Vary the speeds but no sustained high speed. Then you'll get it chaged at 500 miles.
One suggestion is to have the dealer (assuming you're having the dealer change the oil) fill with 9 quarts of Mobil 1 and then give you the last quart. Then when you get home and the oil is hot check and fill to 1/2 way in the hatched area.
That is about 1/2 quart below max and 1/2 quart above min.
If you're changing your own oil (as I do) just bought two 5 quart jugs at Walmart for $22 each and submitted for a $12/jug rebate (two allowed.)
That is $2/quart final cost!

My car was 1/8" over the full mark when received. It did pull oil into the intake. (Z51) I now maintain the oil level near the midway mark on the dipstick and have no further issues. I'd siphon some off.

Just curious how did you siphon it out? Did you need to have the car started for a minute so the dry dump tank filled, then shut it down and siphon from the oil fill?

Starting the car for a few minutes is a good idea. For fun checked the level after the car sat for ~week and it was below the dip stick!
Others have suggested ways to get oil out and if they have done it, it's better than my guess. Since I have tropical fish and plastic aquarium hose, I would use a long length of it, insert it in the tank as far down at least 8 inches and suck on the open end until I saw oil come thru far enough then insert the open end in an empty clear quart bottle. When it looked like enough was out (can always add some back) I'd drive the car get the oil hot and check after 5 but before 10 minutes!

Mine was overfilled at the factory, too, probably a 1/2 qt over full. I tried to siphon/suck out some with aquarium tubing with little luck, probably got 4 oz out in an hour. I finally gave up. It didn't appear to have any lasting effect now at 6,000 miles and two oil changes.

Drive it another 400 miles while following break-in procedures, get your 500 mile oil change, then give 'er hell

Yep, reminds me of draining the rear end heavy oil from the 9 inch Ford rear in my Street Rod, took a long time! But got there!

The oil was warm from just getting back from a drive. I have a siphon tube with a built-in hand pump. The pump has a simple check-ball setup and a few squeezes brings the oil up out of the tank. Once the siphon action started, I just sat back and watched it drain.

I bought the pump at an auto parts store many years ago. Still works fine.
