I just had my local dealer update my infotainment system with the android auto update and so far don't see additional connection to my phone. I had to reestablish a blue tooth connection to my phone but I guess that I was expecting my phone display to be to be mimicked on the car display. Is there a write-up (narrative) that explains what is accomplished or available with this feature? I have to admit that I from that part of the older group that is not that tech savvy.
well here is what I found out from Chevrolet via a chat--you must have android 5.0 or later-you need to down load android auto into your phone from the play store, and as mentioned above you need to connect the phone to the car via a usb connection.
Yes, you need to install Android Auto on your cell phone and you need to connect it via a USB cable. Note: I had gotten a nice little USB charger thingy for my cigarette lighter connection. But that doesn't work because that setup is only to provide power to the phone to charge it. It is not for sending phone signals into your car's audio system, etc. So you need a real USB connection to say your USB connector in the center console.
Once you have that you should see your "Projection" icon on Mylink have the Android Auto symbol. Select that and you should be in the world of Android Auto (AA). If not then go back to your dealer and say "Hey AA isn't working. Show me how it should work".
By and large usually it connects and connects pretty quickly. Sometimes it's a little finicky. Note that AA sends audio output through the USB. Sometimes I hear high pitched clicks. I think that USB audio is of higher fidelity than Bluetooth audio but I'm not sure. When connected your phone will connect the cell phone bluetooth profile to the car for making calls but not the media bluetooth profile. That will go through the USB.
AA does not mirror your cell phone's display to the big screen. The whole concept of AA (and CarPlay - the iPhone version) is that it allows only that which you should need for driving through the large screen display. Otherwise you could be watching say YouTube videos on your big display and that obviously would not be considered save. Instead AA (and CarPlay) display info generated by the apps on your phone (e.g. Google Maps and Google Music, etc. as well as things like Audible, BeyondPod, etc.) in a way that has big buttons and is optimised for the large display and driving in the car.
Feel free to contact me about AA. I'm working at becoming and expert in the field and helpful to all here on that topic.
I was really excited to get this, but without Waze working on the Infortainment screen I find myself not bothering to use it. Google Maps are good, but I like the Nav system in the car and the way it displays on the DIC and the HUD. So overall I'm a bit disappointed. Hopefully they'll add Waze as an app in the near future and I can begin using it again.
Any updates on instructions for AA.
Just started to use mine today and it recognizes it 20% of the time.
Someone probably has a fix for that but I haven't found it yet.
Thanks
Well i haven't got any luck with AA, I use a nexus 5X and it uses usb type c, I made sure I used the data cable but still nothing happens when I plug it in.

Make sure you change the setting from charging to media filess. I had to do this
Not sure if the S4 has the required operating system (android 5.0 or later).
My S4 received the 5.0 update a long time ago (Verizon) so I'd say he SHOULD have it but it would depend on his carrier.
In Android 6.0 Google took out the "auto media/file transfer" switch so now you have to pull your tool bar down and click on "Charging" and switch it to Media/File Transfer. When I was on 5.0 this was automatic.

Me too...disappointed with AA. Oh well, hammer down it is :-)
