Default Cleaning and Shining Black Wheels

What do you folks like to use to clean and shine your black wheels?

Any recommendations?

I would think same procedures as with silver. I usually dust my wheels with damp paper towels, finish with quick detailer. I have a base car and brake dust isn't really a problem (needs cleaning at about 500 miles or a rain storm).

I use windex . Quick spray and a wipe off. It leaves a very clean no product left behind. Nothing on the wheel to attract dirt and dust. I keep an aerosol can in my clean up bag. Works great on chrome. No I don't have chrome wheels. They are polished and powder coated clear.

I pull all four wheels every Spring, wash the wheels, especially the inner section (can't seem to reach all the way to the back when mounted on the car, especially the front wheels), then give them a good coat of Rejex. After the Rejex dries, I wipe off the residue and remount them on the car using a torque wrench set to 100 lbs. IMHO, brake dust will stick less to wheels treated with Rejex.

I use the same thing on my machine faced wheels as I do on the rest of the vette - Chadwick's Triple Play. Cleans, shines and protects without abrasives.

I only have 500 miles on mine. Bought it new with 300 and almost a year old. The face looks good, but I doubt the dealer ever cleaned the inside barrel portion while it sat on his lot for months and months. I have cleaned and cleaned and cant seem to get the inside barrels to shine. pretty dull and a few rough spots. I was thinking about getting some Sonax or something strong for a one time use to get them clean. I assume it will be easier once I start keeping them clean.
Anyone else have that problem?

Just as an FYI...don't ever use paper towels on any automotive surface. Paper towels are made of wood fibers (stating the obvious), and as such, are abrasive.

Adams deep wheel cleaner and a wheel brush for the harder to reach areas. Finish with car shampoo and a wheel only wash mitt.

Windex and paper towels!? Just say no!

I tried a bottle of the Hydro2 and it worked pretty well, but I went back to Armor All Outlast/Brake Dust Repellent-Wheel Protectant. For me it seems to work better and adds a nice shine to black wheels.

I use the Sonax wheel cleaner first, then dry the wheels with a electric leaf blower, then spray on the Outlast and let it dry. Works great!

Glen,

Since the Hydro can't be used with the ceramic brake pads, what do you recommend for those of us that replaced the OEM pads on our Z06 with the carbotech 1520 pads. And, in this thread you mentioned Blackfire Tire Cleaner----are there any other tire cleaning products you like, or is this one the best?

Just cleaned mine an hour ago with the Griots Rubber Cleaner (its OK, but not great), and will doing the Rejex tomorrow...............unless......

Always find your posts full of valuable knowledge---thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Jim

You can clean with anything but I follow-up with Turtle wax BLACK DETAIL spray. This can help cover-up the inevitable pitting that starts the moment you drive off the lot.

One hundred percent agree. Although I use strictly microfiber. And there is probably no difference between paper and microfiber for the wheels. My wheels look just like new using Larry's procedure.

The feeling that paper towels scratch might have been true yesteryear. If you purchase quality paper towels they do not scratch (even use them on my aircraft's plexiglass windshield). I do moisten them with water. There are no fine scratches on my car even performing the dreaded light test.
