Default 2016 Z51...automatic or standard?

Hey guys i am sure this subject has been beat to death. My last vette was an 07 z06. I am now looking at a 2016 z51. I am just wondering if anyone has switched to an automatic and hated it? Thanks for any feed back l.

I often switch back and forth from my Manual Corvette and my Automatic Truck. The manual handles much better and is faster. The automatic is more comfortable and can carry SOOOO much more stuff. I can also see over the tops of other cars much better in the automatic!

Sorry for the cheeky reply, just having some fun. I hope you love whichever you choose.

A8 all day long. You can always paddle shift the **** out of it whenever you want. I don't miss the 3rd pedal at all, and until I owned my A8, considered myself a "holdout" for adopting the new autos as the end all be all, as I LOVED banging gears for hours on end. But the shift speed at WOT on the new autos is really something to behold and it never fails to make me smile.

Either way, you can't loose. The M7 cars are a BLAST to drive and they enjoy perfect ratio spread in which the car is right in the torque after each up shift. I drove both before making my decision and was worried the "honeymoon" would wear off on the A8, but honestly I love jumping in that car and sliding it into "D" and listening to it snap off lightning fast shifts. These aren't you old school slush boxes anymore.

I'll give you an honest opinion for me. I came to the C7 from 13 years of M6 C5s. I like the A8 quite a lot. Agonized over the choice as I am sure you are. My reasons were twofold. Foremost was I had surgery on my right shoulder a few years ago and occasionally the 4-5 shift was painful. Second, I drove the manual like a granny so why not.

I sometimes miss the connection you get with a manual, but the A8 is growing on me. Strictly manual operation is not a real substitute for a third pedal. My 1-2 shift with paddles has a lot of delay at part throttle like I usually drive, 2-3 a little better and the rest are pretty quick. But with eight gears, you are shifting a lot and really quick. Also in full automatic, the transmission is pretty good about always being in the right gear and you can always just blip a downshift or three when ever you want to then manually come back up through the gears or hold the right paddle and go right back to full auto. I have about 4,700 miles on mine since December and am liking my choice more every day. However, I do sometimes miss rowing my own gears.

The other thing that is always in the back of my mind is the problems others on the forum frequently report about the A8 and/or torque converter. I had mine reflashed for the Fast Adapt Relearn about a week ago which helped some with my perceived issues (not the 1-2 delay) and am learning to worry less about it. Hope all continues to go well.

As others have noted, you should try to drive both, or at least the A8 if you have past manual experience with the Corvette. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Good luck with your decision.

I own a M7, if I could do it again I'd go A8.

I had a C4 automatic, traded for a C6 manual, traded on my current C7 M7. No more automatics for me. Have driven automatics with paddel shift, no substitute for a real manual transmission. Two pluses with the manual; no four cylinder mode unless you want it and the best reason a no extra cost option. I love it!

From what I've read the A8's are faster than the M7's.

I had a manual in my 2014 Stingray, and now I have a manual in my 2016 Z06. I like the transmission in both, but the gearing is better in the Z06. More usable and taller 1-2-3 gears. For example, you can hit 60 in 1st with the Z06, but not with the Stingray. So if you're on the fence, drive each transmission before you decide.

Personally, I would still go with the M7 on the Stingray, rather than the automatic. It doesn't matter how fast the A8 shifts, the M7 is more fun.
