How do you rev while driving?
I have an M7 as well and never rev the engine to look cool. The car looks cool, reving looks foolish! That said, the other day at the drive-in bank window, car in neural, parking brake set I leaned out the window reaching for the canister and my right foot hit the accelerator! The teller said over the speaker "that's neat!" I apologized and stated what happened.

Nothing serious. I went to see the gold rush rally in DC last week. There was a big crowd of people as I was driving by. I heard people said "rev it rev it" even though I'm not part of the gold rush people, I think the c7 with npp sounds great. Too bad I have an automatic. I guess you are right, shift it to neutral would do it, but not as cool as a M7.
When I was driving a CDL large truck on the interstate I would if it would not upset people a short blast on the air horn when getting that pull the rope signal from younger kids!
LoL I enjoy hearing the exhaust when I'm WOT but I rarely rev it because I try to be respectful of others and their peace. Life is not Fast and Furious 24/7, I'm not a race car driver, and I'm not trying to win medals.
Not feeling the whole rev your engine thing. My engine revs when down shifting but I don't rev it on purpose. Whenever I see someone do that I either think "kid" or "doucheb*g". Sometimes its a kid who is also a doucheb*g. Or maybe it's a doucheb*g with a kids mentality.
To each his own but not for me.

There is a way to show off the strength of the A8 transmission and rev at the same time. Must be going at least 30 mph, throw into park and rev immediately. This generally only works once but is quite a sight for a crowd.
Guys you don't get it. It's not about being cool, it's just fun! If I'm with my buddies and driving together I want to rev while driving to show them. Seriously, I can see most of the people here are of older age...

WARNING: People who rev their engine for no apparent reason never look cool.
Nevertheless, if you insist try this:
1) Paddle shift into first gear.
2) Put the accelerator pedal to the metal.
3) Remove foot from pedal before you are likely to get a ticket.
Of course you could also just shift into neutral while you are moving and goose the gas pedal. If you really want to look cool do a neutral drop! You put the car into neutral and then press the accelerator pedal until you hit redline. Then you rip the shifter into Drive. It might be expensive if something breaks, but if nothing does you are bound to look really cool.
If you are a real nOOb you might want to start out first by trying it when you are stopped before graduating to more advanced techniques.

Revving a civic though that's another story.

If you have NPP option on your car before your night out, go to options and set your exhaust options to "track".
While rolling pop-in-neutral from drive, bring the tach up above 2500 and stab the gas a few times. It actually does sound pretty good for a stock exhaust. Make sure you let the tach settle back down a bit and put back in drive and be on your way. Again, "old guy advise" probably not a good idea to do this above 50/60 Mph as the tranny has a hard time catching back up if your rolling too fast. A6/A8's are not cheap to replace.
Ya know, after busting your chops about doing a Reverse-Slam and reading your comment above; yes, a lot of the crowd on this forum are probably a little older then you are, but most have as they say "been there done that". I actually did just what you asked about the other day while slowly driving down a side street. The little kid pointing at the car with his mom (8/9yr) was thrilled when I popped it in neutral and made the NPP sing a bit.

You didn't do that to be cool towards a 8 year old kid? You did it for him and you gave him en enjoyment and you had fun.
