Default 2018 GS - 10 Speed Automatic

Does any one know or think that the 2018 GS Corvette will be equipped with the 10 speed automatic transmission that they are putting in the 2017 Camaro?????

There has been info released on the A10 that says that the A10 is the same size as the A8, but outside of GM, no one really knows what they are planning to do.

That same A10 info says the A10 has a one piece transmission case and bellhousing. That is fine for a transmission that bolts directly to the engine(like in a truck or a Camaro) but will not work in the Corvette. The A4's, A6's and A8s had a two piece transmission case and a different bellhousing for each application.

I find it amazing that they would develop something like this without having intentions of putting it on the flagship car. But then, wtf do I know.

If they can make it work in the C7, I would think the A10 would be on the car - just not sure of when it might happen.

At the dealer today and their Corvette specialist said he just got back from a training session and they told them they were going to try and put it in the Corvette. Also said in fwd vehicles it was going to be 9 speed and 10 in rwd.

To put it in the Corvette, they will have to tool up a new transmission case, bellhousing and tailshaft and tailshaft housing. The new case also has to mate up to the differential housing. Not that big of a deal, just fewer units to amortize the design and tooling costs over.

The 10 speed and 9 speed are completely different transmissions, although both were jointly developed with Ford.

OMG, with all the complaining about the A8 can you only imagine all the whining that will go on with a 10 speed?

Two changes to the auto trans over the C7 lifetime doesn't seem like a GM move to me. (6 to 8, 8 to 10) I'd bet they are planning on using it on the next model.

The 4 speed and the 6 speed and the 8 speed and now the 10 speed were not developed for the Corvette. They were developed for the high volume pickup trucks/SUVs and were modified to fit in the Corvette, and the Corvette modified so the transmission had room to fit.

The reason the 10 speed is just a couple of years behind the release of speed, is for CAFE. The 10 speed is needed for the high volume pickups/SUVs, nd to a lessor extent, the few lower volume cars where it will be used.

Also, my personal opinion is that GM is not happy with the A8 and is rushing to get the A10 into production. Normally you wouldn't have such a short product lifespan on a major component such as a transmission. To many dollars involved in R&D and tooling. That's my opinion, so everyone just keeps your panties on and not jump on me. I'm not stating it as a fact, only as my personal opinion.

According to the "GM Inside News Forum":

The Corvette Z06 shares an LT4 with the ZL1 and CTS-V-- with it being the pinnacle of General Motors performance one would assume it's the next logical candidate. However, according to Corvette Forum,*at the NCM Corvette Bash a few weeks ago one of the engineers said the A10 won't physically fit, despite being sized similar to the A8; the two extra gears make it slightly longer.

Also muddling the conclusion is the fact that the 8-speed isn't going away, it's slotted to continue in the Camaro, Corvette, Cadillac sedans and GM's full-size pickups.

It's possible we see both the A8 and A10 coexist. Similar to the Camaro SS and ZL1, we could see the 8-speed handling lower trims and the 10-speed reserved for the higher end models like ZL1 and Denali.

I'm waiting for the Zora with the 16-speed transmission.

First, 8 speed on the Corvette is gear overkill... More gears are not necessarily Better. The torque range is so wide you could do 4 gears with no problem.

The issue is conversion to turbo motors... they have ZERO torque at idle, and MUCHO torque at 1800 rpm... the extra gears are for "spool-up" from a dead start.

The N/A engines don't need this.

...or just choose the M7 and really have fun driving your Corvette. I know it's not an option for everyone, but it sure is fun!

My thoughts exactly, and what is wrong with 8 forward gears ? It's just a pissing match. There is a diminishing return on going with more gears.
It was a big deal going from the 4spd auto to the 6 speed and engineers had a hard time getting "significant" improvements.

Look at Chrylser's 9 speed fiasco what a POS that is...

Was . . . seems to be all sorted out now. I have one in a '15 Cherokee Trailhawk, and it's as smooth as silk and completely trouble-free.

If the A10 has rectified the significant manual shift delays and overheating that make the A8 unacceptable,
I will buy an A10.

Everything they say is worthless because Corvette engineers have a documented history of blatantly lying to faces of we Corvette owners.
"A8 shifts faster than PDK"
"C6 can't handle the torque of the 427 without a fixed roof"
etc, etc, etc

It's not whining. The A8 complaints are legitimate.
The Corvette community needs to stop denying the fact that the A8 has issues and hold GM accountable.
I'll keep my clutch pedal until GM offers a transmission that is worthy of replacing it.

Well the A8 is more or less a failure so as I see it they can't lose on the A10.
