Default DIY Sunscreen

I live in South Texas were it is blazing hot so a sunscreen is almost a necessity. Commercial sunscreens don't seem to fit the Corvette very well so I decided to make my own. The finished product turns out to cost more than most commercial sunscreens but in infinitely better.

The materials you need are Reflex, looks like the stuff regular sunscreens are made from but a bit thicker. I bought mine from the local Ace Hardware store by the foot. You need about 5' because the width of the material is not enough to cover the windshield. Also some clear plastic that is generally used to cover tablecloths and such.

Put the clear plastic over the windshield of the car and trace the inside of the black mask using a Sharpie with normal tip. I used the point where it goes solid black. The plastic will adhere to the windshield because of static cling. Cut out you pattern leaving the black line to make you next job easier.

Lay you pattern on the Reflex and trace around it. The black line will help because the clear plastic is hard to see on the Reflex. Touch up your tracing to get a nice smooth shape. Cut out the shape using regular scissors.

The sun visors on the C7 are too stubby to hold the sun screen in place! I melted a couple of hole just to the right and left of the bulge where the mirror is and epoxied some clear silicone suction cups I got at Hobby Lobby. The suction cups are about an inch in diameter and have a post on the back with a metal hanger. Just remove the metal hanger. The hole needs to fit the post.

To store the shade, roll it up! Put the shade in place the first time. Because of the suction cups it will only go one way. Starting from the driver side roll it up as you pull it out. Put some Velcro on the tail end to hold it in place. I use a couple of 4" strips one oriented long ways and one short ways to give some adjustment.

Deploy it using the same method, roll it into place.

Good idea to use clear plastic to make a template.

I like the accordion-folding sunshades that are made of bubble-wrap covered with aluminized mylar. The accordion fold is easier to handle than rolling a sunshade, IMHO.

I just buy one that is bigger than the windshield then cut it to fit. Your clear-plastic template idea will make the cut much more accurate.

Yeah, I don't think there is any way to get the Reflex to accordion fold.

I have a Heatshield in mine, but they're a little pricey at $40. They're made to fit depending on your model. It rolls up with velcro and I put it behind my seat.

The accordion shade I bought is high-quality and fits nicely using the visors to hold it in place. It would fit even more snugly but the Blendmount/V1 hanging on the rearview mirror separate it a bit from the windshield in that area but it still blocks the sun effectively as is. I use it everyday on my dd C7 - works great.
