The RPM's will jump up when it downshifts into 2nd. It should do the same when it drops into 1st as well.

If you are seeing a gear display with an A8, you are in manual mode - probably from using the paddle shifter. The computer can (and will) override your selection if it goes outside the operational parameters in the program - like going too slow for the gear selected.

understood ..but ....my concerns is ....why does the display still read 3rd gear ...if as you state the override ...dropped it to 2nd gear ... for example ....when you stop in manual mode the display drops to 1st. gear ...even if the drive does not downshift to 1st gear ...

You see your gear display in both manual and auto mode.

He is asking if it's normal while in manual mode downshifting into 3rd and while in 3rd decelerating is it normal for the car to lunge forward while slowing. The answer is yes...it's normal as the computer will sometimes give it a bit of acceleration for no reason at all. I have noticed this in other gears as well occasionally.

And lets not forget when you use the paddle shift to manually downshift that rev-matching also comes into play !
