Default Android Auto Help

Has anyone figured out how to download a map into android auto off their cell phone and get it to back up automatically after you turn off the car.

I got it to take an embedded map I created on my notebook. I emailed the map to my cell. I can get it up on Android auto but I can't seem to find a way to save the map so it comes up when I start the car. Instead I have to go through lots of button pushing to recreate it everytime.

What am I missing here? So far android auto has been a pain in the a..

I don't really understand what you're saying. When I plug in my Android via USB, maps and everything automatically show up perfect.

My only issue is the phone gets really hot after 20 mins. I believe a software issues.

Android Auto works well, for what it is designed to do. Very well in fact.

Add me to the list of "I don't know what you are trying to do".

Let's define terms. "Android Auto" (AKA AA) is an app that runs on your cell phone! So when you say download a map into into AA off your cell phone you have just made nonsense! Similarly "get it to backup automatically after you turn off your car" makes no sense either.

I got it to take an embedded map I created on my notebook.
What would be "it" in this sentence? AA? Also what exactly is an "embedded map"?

I emailed the map to my cell. I can get it up on Android auto but I can't seem to find a way to save the map so it comes up when I start the car. Instead I have to go through lots of button pushing to recreate it everytime.

I think what you are missing is a firm grasp of what AA is and isn't. AA it a way of "projecting" (AKA "mirroring") only certain apps from your Android cell phone to the main display in your vette. The core apps are Google Maps and Google Music. Whatever app you use for messaging (I use Google Hangouts) also is used by AA. AA also integrates hands free calling via a Bluetooth connection (using the Phone profile, not the Media profile. Media (i.e. sound/music, whatever) goes to your car's speakers through the USB itself - and it sounds better than Bluetooth anyway).

Other apps are available that utilize AA are available and are integrated in the AA experience. So far all other apps appear to be music/audio related. I use, for example, Audible, BeyondPod and TuneIn. So, IOW if you install say Audible on your cell phone and connect it to AA you'll see a selection for Audible in AA.

Assuming you are actually using AA, and I'm gonna assume you're trying to get mapping information or a destination into AA so as to use AA's Google Maps integration to navigate to a place do the following...

Go to Google Maps in a browser on your notebook/laptop/desktop. Search for your destination. Click on the Directions button and select where you are coming from (i.e. Home, Work, etc. assuming you're a Google user and set that up). If you have not done so before use Google's Device Administrators page to "register" your Android phone. You should do this anyway as it's a good thing to have should you lose your phone. Oh and I'm assuming you have a Google account....

If you've done that properly you should see a link that says Send directions to my phone. Select that and choose your phone from the drop down list (you can have many devices - phones/tablets/etc).

You should get a notification containing your directions. If you select that notification it will open Google Maps on your phone. Make sure to tap on the upward arrow to start navigation before you connect your phone to AA. Then when you go to maps by tapping on the left most icon on the bottom of the main display in the car when AA is running you should be continuing the navigation.

Note you can send multiple destinations from your browser's Google Maps -> your phone. They will all be notifications in Android. Thus if you have a few places to go today, say 3, send yourself 3 notifications and then use them as you may.

Note 2: If you integrate into the Google ecosystem and say hook up your Google Calendar(s), AA will notice that you have an event say tonight for drinks with that fine lady and as long as you've included the address in the calendar event, you should see it in AA when you connect up. Simply tap the car in AA to start directions. I, for example, have subscribed to my Meetup.com calendar which makes events for every Meetup.com meetup I RSVP yes to. So when I leave work I just say "OK where are we going tonight?" and look to AA for the card showing me directions.

Note 3: Along with Google Maps and Music and other audio apps, you get Google's wonderful voice recognition. While on a route tap the microphone or hold down the push to talk for a few seconds and say something like "McDonalds nearby". AA will search an present of a list of nearby McDonalds. If you select one you've just added a way point. Pretty neat but AFAICT you can only do one way point.

Feel free to ping me with any questions. I've been using AA for some 3 months now and I love it.
