Been an A6 07 owner for the past 9 years. Picked up my M7 Stingray 3weeks ago. I had to make the change from the A6. It was one of the main reasons I wanted to get the C7. Trying to get up to speed on the 1-4 shift. First time in heavy traffic today. Knowing what I do know about the 1-4 so far my typical shift to 2nd occurs with only 194 mi on the clock, between 23-28 mph. In traffic today I did see the DIC display the 1-4 shift for economy at around 16 to 18 mph. Beyond that range at 20mph and up the message goes away. So when the message disappeared at 25mph I shifted to 2nd as usual with no problem.
My questions are.... Do you have to shift to 4th when the message is displayed? It disappears at 20+
If you do shift to 4th can you then downshift to 2nd and then back to 3rd?
While the 1-4 shift message is displayed, the CAGS will force a shift to fourth gear; however, you can immediately shift to another gear. I just wind out the speed (and RPMs) to greater than 20mph and then shift to 2nd. If that is annoying, a CAGS bypass is available for approx $20
That's called skip shift or CAGS. Gas mileage ******** feature. If you don't like it there is a cheap plug in module to defeat it. It forces a shift from 1 to 4 under certain slow acceleration and low speed conditions. You can actually divert to 3rd instead of 4th or you can go to 4th and then second. Or you can just accelerate more quickly or to higher revs in 1st to avoid the force into 4th.
As soon as I feel the gate guiding me to 4, I shift directly to 3rd. I find this much better for the engine as the shift to 4 is too low a speed. You can always put on the CAGS skip **** eliminator but I just got used to a move to 3.

The answer is no you can not shift to 2nd!
I consider it a safety hazard as it did not happen with me since I shift out of 1st above 20 mph. However the first time I was in bumper to bumper traffic and tried shifting at ~15 mph I was fumbling and looking down to see why it would not go into 2nd! By the time I realized why, I had slowed to <10 mph! Luckily the person behind me did not get a text message beep or they could have been in my tail!
Having not had an accident with another car in over 50 years of driving (looking for wood) distracted driving is my major concern today! A CAGS eliminator is just one thing I can do to keep away from these incompetent, conditioned response drivers!
I had a CAGS eliminator in my C6 and as soon as they were available for the C7 (mine is a September 2013 build) I bought it. For ~$20 an easy install!
Like Pavlov's Dog, Unfortunately Some Folks "MUST" Look at a Beeping Cell Phone. It's a Learned Conditioned Response!
I am still in the breakin period but i guess i dont understand why this is a problem. I never shift 1-4 even with the message appearing. I just keep the revs going a little more and shift into 2.

Am I doing something wrong?
There are several parameters including engine temp. and throttle position, but I don't think RPM is one of them... IF you are above 20 MPH it should not lock you out.
Thanks for the responses. I get what your all saying that's what I thought. Going to keep 1st gear shift at 20+, I like the post I read that says just drive it like a Corvette.
Happy 4th to all !
