State Farm offered me a discount for my BMW if I used their smartphone data recording app. I said, "No thanks. I like my privacy."

Hope OnStar is not automatically reporting to State Farm? Will check into this!

I don't think I even have OnStar turned on. I didn't sign their document and gave them a fake phone number. They evidently have my email address, because they sent a "Your OnStar Account Set Up is Incomplete" message a few months ago which I ignored.

All a none issue for me. Free five years of OnStar basic with my new 2016. Do I need it, probably not. Am I glad for the free 5 years. Absolutely, why not?

True, I don't subscribe but my clock knows when I change time zones and changes automatically.

So whatever benefits Onstar offers, I get almost free...what's so hard to understand about that?

So does OnStar membership automatically send driving data to State Farm?

There is an awesome thread around here with people complaining about "hill assist" on the m7s. Apparently it is bullchit from GM, and a real driver doesn't need no stinkin hill assist.

Well, I love OnStar. It's an awesome service.

However in this specific case, I'm betting that the GPS antenna is in the rear view mirror. Good place for it with sky sight lines. OnStar depends on GPS, the clock depends on GPS, nav does, etc.

BTW, I had a problem viewing onstar data. They remotely upgraded my software and the problem is fixed. Sadly, as many CF members know, this is government controlled and now there's a black helicopter hovering above me.

Not that I am aware of. It is an opt in that requires one to sign up for through your agent.

I agree, the cost is way too high for the rare occasion it gets used. Since everyone has a smart phone now, the need is not so great. They do offer interesting things but i did not get any significant insurance discount for the stolen vehicle tracking feature. If insurance companies offerred significant discounts for having it, that would make the cost more palatable. Given that a corvette is usually the 3 rd car in the stable, having it on all 3 cars gets expensive and we can only drive one car at a time.

The latest trend, why just profit once when they can keep you on the string forever. As soon as my free subscription expires it is gone.

Oh dude, I pay $99 for a year. I didn't get the turn by turn package, because that is ridiculous, I got the security package which gives me:

- text alerts if my car alarm is sounded
- ability to track my car location

Other stuff.

You know, many of us spent $1000 on a dash in carbon. Talk about a rip off, I'm almost ashamed of myself. Almost.

What we value is sometimes stupid.

$8 a month to always know where my car is and to get a text if the alarm sounds seems like a great value to me.

Do you lose your car often?

No, but the thought terrifies me!

Like the guy around here who had his dealership put 150 miles on his car (he took it in for a 500 mile oil change and got it back at 650)

Or like when I had to do valet parking, needed the car at 2 AM and found it with <drum roll> onstar!

I would totally spring for at least the protection plan, if not the security plan. I'd feel safer knowing that someone would send help if I crash or get hit by some idiot on the road. That's worth a few dollars a month. The only addon on the security plan seems to be stolen vehicle recovery, guess it can't hurt to have it.

graj6, are you really sure you'd want it back ? If my car is stolen, I hope they head south across the border with it. I do not want it back after it has been trashed out.

Haha, if I've put a ton of work into it .... I don't know. I've never had a car stolen.

Can't Onstar disable the engine remotely and stop them from getting too far?

Around here, if they did, odds are the car would get rear ended. Regardless, I would not want the car back.

But a totaled car only gets me whatever the depreciated amount of the car's worth is right? Not enough for a new Grand sport :|

Another question: Even without the Security plan, doesn't the app show me where the car is as long as it has some basic Onstar plan? As in if I'm trying to find it in a parking lot (since it seems to be able to honk the horn / flash the lights or whatever).
