Default Another stupid question

Is it okay to remove the bottom black rubber Part underneath the front end of the car that's in three sections? I think it might be an air dam but I can't imagine it working that well, shouldn't the air coming through the front grill?. I Only raise question because I've seen several c7's without this hanging down from the nose and it looks great

The ones that are missing the middle section are Z51 cars. The 3 section ones are the base cars and I would leave them on since they came from the factory with them .

Air dams have no effect in regards to air coming through the front grill. Lots of people remove them because they like the look better.

As for me I leave them on because I like the warning they give if the front end gets to close to the ground or a speed bump.

What aerodynamic engineering school did you go to?
You are not sure what it's function is, but you are sure it could not possibly work very well????

The people that remove them are like you, they just don't like the way they look, or they get tired of dragging them.

I would leave them on the car, but it's your car. I think they help with aerodynamics and they do give a warning when you get too close to a parking block or going up a steep angle road.

It's there for a reason. How often do you bend down to look under there anyway??

I vote leave them on, GM would not spend a extra penny if not needed.

Tadge addressed this issue in a prior post. He said they affect the vehicle's aerodynamics at speeds over 150 mph. Below that speed the effect is minimal.

Mine came off in the first month. Gm Engineers say that it helps above > 125 miles an hour, I don't live there.

For some reason it really pisses some people off here when you take them off....LOL

Do what you personally want to do.

So, does anyone know the reason Chevy deletes this piece of air dam on the new Z51 cars?

It's for fuel economy below 125 miles an hour.

have you run them both on and off?

I have… .....Absolutely no significant difference in mpg, noise, engine temp or performance....

There is an article somewhere on the forum. But basically balances out the increased rear/down forces due to the larger Z51 spoiler. It is only going to matter at very high speeds.

In fact I have a 2016 Z51 and it has all 3 parts. Because my dealer is stupid. The air dam is installed as part of the PDI. I have yet to go over about 80 mph.

Air dams (that is what they are called) reduce air going under the car and at highway speeds reduce drag, which increases mpg. That is why the Chevy Volt has one about as low as the Vette, as GM states to increase battery range!

At high speeds (>100 mph) they increase front downforce. Tadge (Chief C7 engineer) finally provided info on why the center section was removed from the Z51 and Z06. It created too much downforce causing high speed oversteer when slight understeer is preferred!

I leave the side air dams on my Z51 partly as an indicator when they scrape that the next thing to hit will be the aluminum skid pads or radiator support. When that hit it's a terrible noise and if damaged expensive to replace!

You can certainly remove as some do because they think they don't look good. I believe in "form follows function" so think they look great! Even my side air dams direct air around the front tires and reduce drag.
