I have a 2016 A8 and all the posts about various transmission problems has me concerned. Especially since the 2016's have only a 36,000/3 yr warranty I have been thinking about extended warranties. I would appreciate anyone's experiences with them in general and any opinions as to how much protection they would offer in the event of future A8 problems. I probably will be putting only about 3000 miles per year on the car.

Trans is part of powertrain warranty, right?

Transmission would be one of those things you'd think they couldn't dispute, it's a major part of the powertrain.

You might fight them over a $700 headlight, but a transmission should be included without much debate.

I bought an 84 month/75,000 mile GMEPP for my '16 A8, 2LT Coupe. I doubt I will keep it more than about 5 years and I am putting about 6K miles a year on mine so this should give me the peace of mind during my entire ownership. I went with the GMEPP because it is honored by all GM dealers in the US. Your car will be put into the nationwide database and can be brought up by any GM dealer. It does have a few exclusions like wear items, including bulbs but this is typical of almost every "extended warranty" which are really insurance polices. I had a very bad experience with a 3rd party warranty marketed by Warranty Gold when they declared bankruptcy and all their policies were worthless. I did participate in a class action lawsuit and did recover some of my cost. I will never buy another aftermarket warranty backed by anyone other than the manufacturer. The 2016 models come with a 5 year/60K mile warranty on the powertrain that does include the transmission. I wanted coverage beyond 60K miles and 5 years so this is why I bought the extended warranty. Will all the electronics in the C7 as well as the documented tranny issues I decided I would go for the extended warranty.

We have a forum vendor here, Ken Fichtner of Denny Menholt Chevy that sells extended warranties at discounted prices. It's a nice easy transaction. In the past I have used the GM extended warranty, and even with being 2K miles from home the process was smooth as silk.

As Colonel Morin said your original powertrain warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles. I went with the same policy he did, and in the past I averaged approx the same mileage per year as you. As of now plan on keeping this car at least seven years. My C6 was nine years old with only 28K miles. Yep it was a garage queen, but I hope the C7 will be a road warrior.

Thanks for the responses. I thought the warranties on the 2016 models had been reduced to 3/36. I'll have to check on that.

Not sure about the new one, but the GMPP allows you to customize the years and mileage a bit for low mileage cars to save you money. You may look into a 6 or 7 yr/48k or 56k mile one. This will give you b-b protection for that time and save on mileage.

I always suggest them especially on a high tech piece like the C7.

The bumper to bumper warranty is 3/36. The powertrain itself is 5/60.
