I have a new 2016 Z51, but it didn't have PDR, I know I'd have to add Nav, but anyone then add PDR?
I pulled the cover off, and there's a housing for a PDR, and I think a connector with the 2 microphone pickup wires in a plastic carrier.
Anyone take this apart? Did earlier years have any of this stuff?
There is a thread somewhere on here that posted the other parts needed in addition to NAV. Depending on what your doing with PDR, it might be better to purchase a vbox, which you can then use in multiple cars instead of being locked into one vehicle.

That was one of my considerations, I just figured someone here had tried it, wanted to get more details about the wiring and fixtures where the PDR is mounted.
I'm not sure if the 16's are different because it looks like it's ready for pdr, yada, yada, yada

I hate that part of the order. What does PDR have to do with NAV? I want the PDR but not the nav. It sucks you have to have both.
I like that, I might even know people at Garmin to find out how they work.
It works great. Get the one with the auto kit (OBD plug). It records really well and the virb edit software is very easy to use. You can export to a mp4 or directly to YouTube within the software. My go pro will be collecting more dust for sure.

Are there any examples of video quality and data layout?
djnice; PIT Rally looks like fun....looks like they could have done a little better job at grouping faster cars/drivers to the front. I'd hate to spend $350 entry and get stuck behind a 4 banger ricer.
OP; if your looking for a quality picture to share with friends, go with the aftermarket camera for sure. Just for fun, try your smart phone in a RAM windshield mount using one of the many racer/track phone apps. Add a OBDII and pull all your cars telemetry into the mix. This can all be done for $30 to $50 bucks...or less depending on the phone app.
Here are some samples;
Using my phone (Samsung S5) to video education flick on a local track.....
As you can see, major difference between the two. Add in one of the track apps with a $15 OBDII from Amazon (to overlay the cars telemetry) and your making videos to impress your friends for little money. Enjoy the ride

Here's the same track using my '15 Z51 PDR camera;

I have a GoPro, in fact I have a ThinkWare dash cam in it now that does okay. But I want the telemetry to go with it. I recorded all my Autocrossing run on a camcorder, but what's missing is the data, and I'm a data guy
But I'm starting to think PDR might not be the best way (for the bucks) now to get that data. I didn't really want a standalone data recorder, as then you have to figure out the sync points, but there is more tech out there for this than I had found before, so maybe there's a better solution that meets my goals.
I'd still like a screen based nav, not sure if Android Auto will get nav on the screen is a suitable fashion because apparently only certain phones work with the car. But a new phone is in the schedule, so I'll probably wait for that prior to buying a nav system upgrade, and see how that works.
Does it record any other car telemetry than what's on screen?
There are more and you can drag and drop and put in different appearances. This was my first day with it and like i said, super easy and worked well, just what i was lookimg for. I leave countless hours of video on my go pro videos that never get seen againbecause it takes too long and lacks data integration
The VIRB setup looks pretty sweet, the one example they had a cell on the front wondow, and it looks like the video was from a GoPro on his helmet, I like that.
Waiting to see if my Garmin contact replies to my email.
