A8 wont downshift
The water temp started to rise rapidly to like 75%, as i was nearly at the top i didn't worry to much as i know that as soon as i reached the summit i could drop down in tour mode during the descent.
As the car was cooling down i had an overtake opportunity hard pushed the pedal down had but the autobox would not change down.
i had to shift down using the paddles.
After 30 mins or so of cooler driving i tried it again and it shifted fine, was the an b"gearbox overheating issue"?

If you are shifting with paddles, the trans may assume you are in your "desired" gear, and the trans will not auto downshift.
If the trans is overheating, it should display a CEL or go into limp mode.
So based on what I read here there may be a little confusion on what mode you are in and when it is suppose to shift.
"Manual" is not a mode like Touring and Sport mode. You can be in Touring or Sport AND be in Manual or Auto.
When the Transmission is in Manual, the paddles shift it and it will hold a gear until you shift it. This is a given.
Based on your OP it sounds as if you had the vehicle in Auto and then used the paddles to shift. When you do this it temporarily sets the transmission into Manual. You can confirm this by looking at the indicator by the shifter, the M will be lit in red. At that point the transmission is expecting you to shift it. If you do not shift it manually for a certain period of time it will default back to D (drive) or automatic.
Here is what I am guessing happened....
You used the paddles to shift placing it in temporary Manual. Then you expected it to automatically shift for you before it defaulted back to Drive from Manual. There was no actual problem caused by heat or anything else. It worked as designed.
Sport or Touring mode is irrelevant to the problem.

I get your pint but no, thats not what happened
I was using sport with the paddles on the ascent then as i stated earlier i changed the mode to Touring so that the car would change up on its own to a higher gear and start to cool the engine.
It was probably 5-10 mins into this mode when i tried to kick down, the gear box had been shifting on its own quite normally in that period until i asked for the kickdown.
does that make it clearer ?
