Default Bad Gas Distributed Questions

So recently it was reported that over 450,000 gallons of 30%+ ethanol gas was distributed across the state of Oklahoma. If anyone with knowledge on the topic can help that would be awesome.

Oklahoma only runs 91 octane and one of the places I got gas from was on the list of sites given that gas. I already drove 80% of that tank since because I wanted to spend my days off cruising. I know of the possibilities of damages to the injector due to this bad gas. What else can I do or should I be looking for? This is a first for me.

That was for sure no accident. Gasoline that is shipped through the pipelines contains no ethanol. It is added to the gasoline at the local pipeline terminal when the gas is taken from the large storage tank to the semi trailer tank delivery truck.

No single delivery semi tanker holds 450,000 of gasoline, so that means the ethanol was added to some 65-70 semi tanker trucks.

I understand. Not arguing that point but the fact that something like this happened. Someone is gonna be responsible if there are damages to my vehicle and vehicles in general.

Fill it back up and drive it. One tank isn't going to damage the injectors or anything else.

I was thinking that. The gas itself should be diluted. If I add some...it should dilute it even more. I was thinking of draining the rest but like you said...1 time shouldn't hurt the car.

Fill up with ethanol free gas.

Go to pure-gas.org

Then click on "map"

Then zoom in on your city/state

Then click on a blue teardrop near where you live to see the brand, the street address and the octane. There a lot of stations that sell ethanol free gas in Oklahoma.

I doubt there is a way to drain the gas. Siphoning will be impossible because of the anti-siphon grid in the filler neck.

Using the pressure port on your fuel system you could gather a fuel sample then test it with any simple ethanol tester. That will tell you what percentage you have and will allow you to have proof. Perhaps pick one up at a small engine shop and get a sample while you can. They are simple test tubes that you add fuel, water and when phase separation occurs, you can tell how much alcohol was in the fuel.

If you have 30% ethanol that is VERY hard on the plastic and rubber and I would recommend getting it documented. The manufacturer will simply say they cannot guarantee their engines and systems to operate properly at greater than E10.

Fuel lubricates the pump and injectors as well.

In the short term your fuel trims will go high, but should return to normal as soon as the proper fuel is added.

If your car is new, you don't have the worry of the ethanol breaking free accumulated dirt, but you do have the concern for rubber and plastic fuel system components being affected. Alcohol is a solvent. I worked with many dealers in Brazil who regularly got 20-25% alcohol and in the short term we didn't see any physical damage but the motorcycles needed new EFI mapping to run properly.

If your car has a lot of miles on it, the higher solvent can break free deposits that have settled in for the long term, but that's not too common if you've been using top tier fuels from name brand stations.

This is unfortunately a wait and see kind of situation, but having proof of what was in your tank will either set your mind at ease or allow you to file a legit claim.
