My car is a '16 Z51 with M7 and mag ride. I have noticed that whenever I accelerate hard in first gear from a standing start (or even slightly rolling start), the engine "waffles" like the revs are bouncing up and down. It goes away once I shift into second. Any ideas what this is?

Someone told me it will happen if the traction control is engaged. But that doesn't make sense to me. I usually drive in "Sport" mode.

I'm no expert but if you're accelerating hard enough, especially in 1st, your tires could be spinning even though you might not notice it.
And, with traction control on, it will intermittently cut power to the engine trying to keep the tires from spinning.
Once you hit 2nd gear, the tires are probably not spinning as much.
Others with more technical info might chime in

Thanks - that could be it. Doesn't feel like tire spin but who knows?

I know what you mean! fully engaged the clutch and then into the throttle ( just because i don't want to wear it excessively) Sometimes it feels like the clutch is slipping or in the old carburated days, the carb wasn't dumping the fuel in...

will have to try TRACK mode to see.

Sounds good - thanks.

As I can't swear off of putting the pedal to the metal, I clearly need some "tire glue"!

Might want to be careful with "tire glue". Too much traction leads to broken diff and transmission parts. Or half shafts. Check some of the posts about broken parts using "launch mode" at drag strips and the "Mountain" driving school.

Could be hitting the rev limiter also. Watch your RPMs to determine if it is happening under or at the rev limit.

See if the traction control light flashes on your dash. I bet it does.

More than likely, as stated, it's your traction control.
If you put your car in different modes, the traction control is on, unless you push the center button on the mode selector. If tire spin is your want, then push and hold the tc button down until the two orange lights come on. That will turn all the Aids off. Be careful though! In weather mode, it will limit what you can turn off.
putting the car in track mode, then pushing the center button twice quickly will bring up the ptm (performance traction management) sub menu, which then allows you to cycle through the various modes. Each turn on it to the right will give you less and less traction/active handling/ptm intrusion.
If your car has pdr, then record yourself doing what you're experiencing, post it or send to me! And we can take a closer look at it.
Hope this helps!

Not the case - I've been watching that. Seems to be the traction control!

Okay, tried Track mode versus Tour mode and the throttle off the line is better... in Tour it is not near as responsive... easily spun the wheels but i knew it.... so i believe it to be related to drive modes and throttle sensitivity... personally i would like more customization in the Drive Mode Settings, so i can pick an choose all parameters, not just exhaust and steering... but throttle as well.... would make my car feel much faster.

traction control tells the engine control that the T/C needs help with spin and the ECM will retard the timing until the spin or near spin is over then the timing will return to normal. It all happens in nano seconds, but a very smart system.

Try a Vitesse throttle controller.
