So I just picked up a nice 2016 C7. Got a great deal on exactly what I would have ordered. Loving it so far!
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I have an iPhone 6 (not a 6S), and it doesn't have Siri.
I have updated to the latest version of iOS, and when I connect my phone via USB cable I get the Apple Carplay icon on the infotainment screen. Problem is that when I try to open it I get an error message telling me to enable Siri on the settings in my phone. Problem is that I don't have Siri on my phone so I can't enable it.
From what I can tell on the Chevy website it only mentions needing a 4S and above. Apple's site indicates that CarPlay should work on a 6 (and 6S).
So am I SOL? Can anyone confirm if I'm right in concluding that CarPlay won't work with the 6?
How do you get a 6 without Siri? Can you update your iOS?
In theory it should still work for some functions, but the main thing with CarPlay is the hands free aspect which you need Siri for. You should be able to still navigate to a lot of the stuff from the screen though, unless it won't work without Siri. lol.
I have had the phone a while. They used to offer the plain 6 model without Siri. From what I can tell it can't be upgraded.
My music plays just fine via the native infotainment system, so it really isn't a huge deal. I was really just trying to figure out if I was missing something. It seems odd to me that GM would limit the functionality of the system in that way, but I'm probably in the minority of users that have an older phone.
So I can listen to music and make calls just fine, but I can't even open the CarPlay menu. It just gives me an error screen and tells me to enable Siri. LOL
Siri has been around a lot longer than the iPhone 6 ... I have an iphone 6 and I assure you Siri work perfectly fine on it. an CarPlay has nothing to do with Siri.
Siri has been an integral part of iOS since iOS 5[3] and was introduced as a feature of the iPhone 4S on October 14, 2011
Yeah but I can understand CarPlay not running without Siri, it's sort of the whole point of hands free integration. It's weird that you have an unupgradeable iPhone. Get a new one! Lol
Hey guys, thanks for all the help! I got it figured out.
Apparently, I'm a dumbass. I already knew that, and now you all do too! Back when I had my 4s, the voice control, facetime, and siri were bad about getting activated in my pocket. So to combat that, I disabled them by locking them with restrictions.
So evidently when I transferred everything over to my new 6 it transferred over the restrictions too. I just always assumed that I didn't even have siri since I could never see it in any of the menu settings or anything under the "General" page. This was because I had it locked with restrictions.
So I got it going. I must say that the "Hey Siri" is pretty darned cool. I like the nav better than the one in the car too, but I guess it's good to have both.
So the answer to my original question of "will CarPlay work without Siri?" is a most definite NO! But if you have an iPhone 4s or newer it should most certainly work with your CarPlay!
Siri has been featured on all iPhones since the iPhone 4S. As the illustration shows in the above post, go to the siri setting and make sure it's enabled. Most likely the toggle is currently in the off position on the OP's iPhone 6.
