Cracked HUD Lens/Cover
Hello,
I was cleaning the HUD lens on a friend's '16 Z06 and a light pressure on the lens caused it to crack all around the outer edge.
I used the same light pressure I have been using on a my '12 Camaro HUD lens with no problems.
It felt no stronger than a potato chip. It seems very fragile compared to other HUD lenses.
The dealer says there are no TSBs for the lens.
Has anyone had a problem like this?
If so, what was the resolution?
Thanks in advance!

Wow! A cracked lens, does the unit still project on the windshield? Cold temperature could have caused the plastic to be brittle or the lens was defective. Removing and replacing the lens/unit will be a big costly job. Talk to your dealer and discuss warranty replacement.

It was after an evening wash and dark by then, but not what I would call cold. I was in shorts.
I feel the lens was defective as I used exactly the same light pressure I do on the Camaro lens. Seemed way too fragile.
Dealer is consulting with regional Chevrolet Rep about a warranty replacement.

It's the first that I've heard of someone breaking the plastic cover, which merely keeps the dust out of the housing and should not affect the projection... unless the actual fracture distorts the image. I believe that the piece can only be replaced from underneath the dash, but I could be wrong. I will certainly be more careful when cleaning that area. Thanks for the information.

If it's as you said, it's a defective lens. Just go to another dealer if this one won't help. There is no way the plastic should crack from lightly touching it.

Luckily the dealer in question (Boardwalk Chevrolet in Redwood City California) is the best in the area and has been really good to me over the years. I've had multiple convertible tops on my '12 Camaro. The last time we quasi-custom built one together as we figured out how to use the parts from subsequent model years to fix deficiencies in my MY parts. Jason and Joe are great guys!
I'm sure they are doing their best for me.

Thanks for the thought.

Are Jason and Joe in service?
I take it you've been quite satisfied w/ having all your Chevys serviced by Boardwalk?
Thanks for the info!

Glad to hear you're in good hands! I've just started my automotive relationship with Boardwalk recently; I only know Tim and Dean on the sales side.

Joe is the service manager. Jason M can be found in the Nissan bay (which is right next to where the Vettes are serviced by Dave). There is another Jason at the Chevy service desk. He is good also.

Very unusual for that to break. Hope the dealer can get it fixed under warranty for you.

After doing some research on the cracked HUD lens cover, the consensus among the detainers I spoke with is:
Risk for cracking is highest when it is cold outside.
The reason appears to be when the windshield gets cold it acts as a cooling element for items in the vicinity. Since the dash cover and HUD lens are close, they get cooled down and the lens becomes more brittle since it is so thin.
So even though this particular lens may have been defective or installed in a way that induced stress, it is best not to touch them when they are cold.
Live and learn I guess.
