Default Do not open windows over 165 MPH

Is it a myth or should you not open windows in speeds in excess of 165MPH?

Here's a cautioinary tale...we were on the way to the vet, as our poor hamster, Martin, had slipped a disc while running on his exercise wheel. In our haste to get him to the doctor, I accelerated to 165 mph, and opened the window hoping to give him some fresh air as he seemed to be hyperventilating

Of course, when I did this, the change in air pressure sucked Martin right off the passenger seat and into the void...I stopped as soon as I could, but a search for Martin was fruitless.

Never, ever open your Vette's windows at 165 mph!

No, not a myth! Above 165 it will suck you out just like rapid decompression of an airliner at high altitude.

I was given permission to drive on a runway one time in my C5 Z06 and the window seals blew at 150 mph on their own because the vent in front should have been duct taped shut and the cabin pressure exceeded the window seal capacity. Can I look forward to that in a C7 as well?

Open windows will greatly reduce aerodynamics and greatly increase cabin noise.

Suddenly opening the windows at 165 will cause a sudden drop in cabin pressure which may be enough to cause your ears to pop, but unlikely. You may also get oscillation as the air moves in and out of the cabin, the oscillation noise or pressure at 165 could hurt your ears.

My guess is, most likely nothing bad will happen, mainly just increased drag resulting in lower top spead, lower acceleration and lower gas mileage.

PS- I've been 165+ only once in my life. I actually hit 185 in my 2013 Shelby GT500 and chickened out before reaching 200. One thing I distinctly remember was, "BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL"

Maybe best to not fuss with the windows at 165

I run the Rolex24 roadcourse at Daytona several times a year. There's an event in April, and several in the fall.

All the events except for one require that you run with the windows open, and the closed window event is coming up Dec 9-11!!

My C6 Z06 and ZR1 were about 6 to 10 mph slower with the windows open. At the Dec event the C6 Z06 would do an easy 175 with the windows closed, and 165-170 with the windows open. The ZR1 does 185 with the windows up, and is slower with the drag from open windows.

I've only had the C7 Z06 to one event here so far - last month with the windows open. At that event the fastest was 175 mph.

I don't know exactly what to expect, but I'm pretty sure I'll get faster than 175 next month with the windows closed.

Bottom line - at 165 mph there's no difference with the windows up or down except windows open is noisier, and the drag from windows open will slow you down.

BTW - if you want to run the event Dec 9-11 and try your windows up and down to see the difference, take a look at the thread in the link below. The links to the Audi club application form or the online registration at motorsportreg.com say that registration closes tomorrow, Nov 14th, so get signed up right away!! The co-organizer is Hooked-on-Driving, and perhaps their registration period extends longer.

Here's a link to a thread in the AutoX/Roadrace section with info about the event:

Come on Juan---I hardly believe there is any discernible interior/exterior air press differential on any ground vehicle at almost any speed. There MAY be turbulence or loud noise if a window(s) is opened at a high speed.

Been nearly that fast with the top off.

Ear plugs recommended. The noise drastically changes over 135 and then again at 150.

Personally, I do not think it is wise to open the windows at any speed. A short while back I was driving down the Oregon coast and a damn hamster flew right in my window!

Well played.

I'm really not going to worry about it since I have no real plans to drive that fast out on a public road anyway.

Windows down at 160 mph is LOUD, unless you have a helmet on.
