Default OnStar

This is my 1st Vette and I am new to on-star so ?? is: What plan do most of you guys purchase ?? Is it really worth the $$ ?? and how much do you actually use it since most of us don't use our vette as a daily driver ?? These ?? may have been asked before but I could not find them on the forum.

Thanks in advance JoeBean !!!

I'm in the same boat and wondering the same thing. So far, I do like being able to see where my car is but not sure what else it gives me. Was pretty annoyed it started playing an ad the other day that I could not easily stop.

What part of OnStar appeals to you? If it is Navigation use your phone. You didn't mention if you have Navigation from the factory. Typically your smart phone will be more than adequate. OnStar, in my opinion is too expensive for what you get. If you want peace of mind, and don't mind the expense then it is fine.
Let us know what kind of phone you have, if you have on-board Navigation, and what appeals to you most that is in OnStar.

Y'all are going to get responses from love it to hate it. In the end, it is a choice only you can make. One thing most will agree on, is pay by check if you choose to renew.

Default On-Star

I have a 2016 Z51 3LT A8 with Nav. I do have Nav on my phone as well. I thought about that and that was one thing that made me question buying on-star. I'm not to worried about the lost protection as I do not live in a area where car theft is a problem but that don't mean that I want ever visit an area that is high in crime. Having on-star is a convenience though but I think that the price is a little high for how much that I would be using it. I know that I am going around the mud-berry bush with my thought process but I guess that I'm just a little confused as to if it is worth it's value for someone that do not use their car as an everyday driver.

I think that I'm just trying to see how many other owners have it on there car and how much do they actually use it.

Based on what you describe I don't think the OnStar is good value for you. Between your on-board Nav and your phone you are good to go.
I have Android Auto and on-board Navigation and both are excellent. As far as theft location and the like, I use a Trackr gadget that is stuck to my car in a hidden area for location if needed. I like gadgets though. Just google Trackr and the information is there. It is good for finding stuff you misplace or want to track.

Never used OnStar. Don't see the value of it. If you want tracking protection spend a few bucks on http://trackr.com and you'd be done.

I have an iPhone and nav with the car. Not really sure the advantages of OnStar other than being able to locate the car. Does it just provide the locate service, remote features like locking the car with your phone, and navigation?

I've never kept OnStar past the trial period on my vehicles. Just never saw the advantage compared to the expense.

Not only is it an expensive nonessential add on, OnStar is ethically challenged if you ask me.

Since my '15 Z51 A8 is stored 4-5 months it is not worth it in my opinion. Tried to negotiate a 6 month or monthly deal with OnStar and they won't hear of it. Oh well, their loss.

Only benefit I really find is their ability to unlock the car if you lock you keys in it.

Airbag deployment, theft recovery, 911, concierge...your decision.

Didn't think much about it until I got a notice from my insurer (State Farm) saying I could get a discounted OnStar subscription through them, and maybe an insurance discount too. I continue to put aside all the conspiracy / big brother theories, however this coordination was just a little too close for me.

Last week I disabled the OnStar system on one of my vehicles (very easy and no consequences in the operation of the car), and will keep my eye out on how to accomplish the same for my Cruze and two Vettes that have it on board.

I let onstar run out since as stated before it is a lot for very little. One thing of note. They are bound by LAW to assist anyone who calls in an emergency on onstar even if the unit is not a subscriber.

Just a little piece of info they would not want you to know...........

You cannot lock your keys in it.....it won't lock if you keys are inside the vehicle.

Has anyone looked at Hum from Verizon (https://www.hum.com/features)? Seems to be the same features as On Star but for only $10/month. You install it yourself and the site says it's compatible with the vette.

I used to maintain an Onstar subscription on multiple GM cars I owned. But as they started moving packages around (such as moving stolen vehicle assistance to a higher package) and raised prices, I only keep it in the daily driver and mostly if the wife is driving. It will help in an emergency, and in other cases lock locking your keys in the car (which can be done in most vehicles that say it can't) or running out of gas. It is probably not worth it, but I hate to have the wife and kids in a ditch after an accident and think about me saving $160 for the year. Although it most areas help will come pretty quickly even without OnStar.

I'm pretty certain this is not true. There are only a few states that have "duty to rescue" laws that don't apply to crimes. I believe all but 1 of them say "if you are at the scene" which OnStar would obviously not be. So, I think best case scenario there is 1 state...

Additionally, , if the OnStar documents are accurate (and these are a little dated, so not 100% sure), they can't do much for you anyway. The emergency button is disabled, automatic crash notification is disabled and the blue button on a car without a subscription gets you to a new accounts operator that does not have access to your location. If true, best you are hoping for is the new account rep calls 911 for you and tries to get you assistance. Of course, just about every OnStar account person I have ever spoken with was offshore, so not sure how they would even get to the right 911 location.

Interestingly enough, Onstar was sued in federal court once for not helping when a teenager dissapeared in his car that had an inactive OnStar subscription, but I have never been able to find an outcome. I guess it was settled with confidentiality agreements.

So if you decide not to pay, but are counting on OnStar in an emergency, be prepared with an alternative.

Even without a current Onstar subscription, the phone app still works for five (I think) years to remotely lock, unlock, beep the horn, and start a car with an auto transmission. You can also send destinations to the onboard NAV from your phone and get monthly vehicle status reports emailed to you using the app.

Either myChevrolet or Onstar RemoteLink from the iPhone app store gets you going for free.
