Only problem is that you cannot use the iPhone navigation unless it's USB to the car.

What? I use Waze on my iPhone everyday without being connected to USB.

For longer trips, I plug it into the center console USB and run a long lightening cable under the driver's side console to all the way to the dash, which can be plugged into the mag mount on the center vent to keep the phone charged.

Before you do that - have you taken the time to try doing it hands free - utilizing the cars technology? I take calls and text hands free and its a real clean look...just a few thumb clicks on the steering wheel. I guess if your using a music service it might be nice to see your phone.

I thought I'd throw in these pics of the slim line magnetic ball mount from Abstract Ocean. It's very non-intrusive and the magnetic plate slips underneath my phone's case so you cannot tell it's there at all.

Ball mount stuck to aluminum side rail with adhesive so I can remove it easily.

Yes, I drag my USB cable from the center console compartment, and retire it there when I'm done.

anyone tried this? it needs a flat surface I am wondering if it will work on the dash area above the center vent/emergency button area.
Amazon Amazon

and for magnet holders, will they hold when you launch the car or semi hard cornering at spirited runs?

The magnet mount holds my phone fine under normal driving conditions. I haven't tried it at a track day, so YMMV.

That mount you link to at Amazon looks like it needs a LARGE flat area to mount the base. If you are going to mount it on top of your dash (to the leather?) I suppose that might work, but why not get a suction cup glass mount for the windshield if you are going up there?

Why not use the cigarette lighter? I have a small USB connector plugged into that lighter, folded up the cable because it is now very short - works perfect. I actually prefer Waze over the factory nav system.

Because I'm not just using the USB for power. With the connector in the arm-rest, I get music integration with the console and steering wheel controls. Audio directions from Google Maps comes through the stereo too.

I suppose I could link up with bluetooth, but that means the audio gets decompressed from mp3, then re-encoded to bluetooth's format, then decoded from bluetooth before getting pushed through the amplifier.

Any chance you could post a pic of your Samsung mount? I have an iOttie Qi mount but it sticks out too far, so I'd like to get a different one.

Thanks,
Mike

I was in Fairfax VA on 5 Aug 2017, fell and hurt my hip (later found it was fractured) somehow got back in the car and set my TomTom to Home, TomTom said to go straight ahead - but the road was closed, and only choice was left or right! TERRIFIED at this point, I pulled out iPhone with Waze. Waze showed the road was being repaired and showed me the way home was right to get to 495 North. Truly - Waze was a life saver. The TomTom is history now. Even my wife has now converted. Hip is on the mend now, using a cane - still not driving the Vette, but am able to drive our SUV.

Kinda expensive for what it is, but they are solid and totally worth it. Make sure you buy the base as well as the actual dock for your phone. Its a two piece system.
I have the proclip BASE, but added a 'nochoice' ball/magnet system. The steel ball sticks to the proclip base, the round, concave magnet goes on your phone case/phone.
