I have a 16 2LT and the only time the Auto button stays lit is when I push it and leave it.
If I then push the button for bottom air flow only, or top and bottom air flow, the Auto light goes out.
But, it stays in Auto mode and still maintains any higher or lower Temperature change you make.
Auto does not stay on though if you try to maintain a set temperature by manually adjusting the fan speed.

I was always under the impression that if you touched any other buttons then auto mode is off and the car would not strive to match the temperature you set. Are you saying I can set the temp to say 80 degrees, hit a button turning off auto mode and then dial it down to 62 degrees and the car will cool. I think not.

Yes it will still cool it down to 62 in that scenario.

The AUTO button is full auto control from the AC, meaning it will decide the fan speed, which mode/vents to use etc.. If the AUTO is off, the car still keeps the selected temp. So if you turn to 80 with AUTO off, then it will heat up to 80 and if you turn it down, it will cool it back down, however, it will not have full control of the fan speed, vents, or re-circulation control as if it would in full Auto control.

Example. Its on AUTO set at 60 degrees. You then select the mode where it only blows air out of the bottom footwell, the AUTO is now turn off. But it will still keep the temp. You readjust to 80, it will heat up to 80, but it will still only blow out of the bottom footwell.

If it were in auto, it will decide to blow from the bottom, top vents, ot defroster vents and also decide if it will use re-circulate air or not.
