Carplay is my biggest complaint in my GS. Its buggy, slow, quits at random and sucks overall. This is particularly frustrating as it worked fantastically in my 2016 SS camaro. Even took it to my dealer to see if he could flash an update to make it work better. Told me that the database in dealer tech indicated that GM is "working on an update".
Which version iphone are you using? I had some issues with iphone 5 and 6 but once I updated to 7, everything works fine.
I did the latest up date on my phone. Seems to work better but I only gave it a quick test last night. I like that it added icons to the left to access maps and phone without having to go to the white home button every time.
The most recent iOS update (10.3) has improved the response tremendously.
This! I never had a major grip with car play other than the random times that the infotainment unit wouldn't recognize my phone and i couldn't get CarPlay to appear at all. The new software update really has helped the slight lag and i do like the new additions with buttons appearing on the side when using an app, and the new music layout.
overall I've been very happy with CarPlay even the maps app.
Not sure if this is applicable to the volume issue, but I noticed the nav voice prompts to be a much lower volume than the music. Turning up the music volume had no effect on the nav prompts.
I was told by a computer nerd to change the volume during the actual prompt itself. It worked and I able to increase the prompt volume.
Not an issue anymore, but still another in an endless list of minor technical annoyances for those of us that did not grow up with a cell phone or iPad in our crib.

From the Infotainment Manual:
Navigation Voice Preferences
Voice Volume
Adjust the loudness of the audio feedback by touching the − or + button. If a maneuver prompt is being played, and the main volume is adjusted, the prompt volume will update and be saved.

Kind of an old thread, but I have the recognition problem too. Typically if I pull the usb and reinsert it connects but any other suggestions welcome!
It's worth noting the iPhones are very sensitive to the quality of the cable you're using. Intermittent problems can sometimes be solved by switching to a better quality cable. This won't deal with the volume control issues, but other intermittent issues with the iPhone being recognized, etc. might be eliminated.
