Default Jack question

I am going to change my wheels and tires but prefer not to buy a jack just for that and have bother with storage space etc. Past the wheel change, I wont need to lift the car on any kind of regular basis for maintenance, etc.

Question is, my X5 has a low profile scissor jack that will fit under the C7. Any reason why I cant use that? It is rated to handle the weight of an X5 so weight shouldnt be an issue on the C7.

Thoughts?

You will need jacking pucks and the C7 does not have a ridge to catch a scissor jack so I would not recommend using.

As long as you use a sufficient jacking puck you shouldn't have a problem. When using a floor jack, because of the construction of the Vette, both wheels will lift off the ground using one jack point when jacked high enough. I don't think you will run into that as a scissors jack may not lift that high. IMHO, I could be wrong.

At some point, you're going to want to get under the car unless you are completely non-mechanically inclined. I don't do maintenance, but regularly end up doing mods.

Go to Harbor Freight, buy a race jack and stands. You'll walk out of there less than 100 bucks lighter and it doesn't take much space. Big deal.

I'm not sure the scissor jack base is stable enough.

X5 weighs ~5,000, C7 weighs ~3600 explain why the base would work on a higher weight car and not a lower weight one?

I do have pucks attached to the car. The cost of the jack is not the issue. It is storage of something that I doubt I will use again. I dont plan any additional mods under the car and dont do my own maintenance.

I am not going to do something stupid and get hurt I am just exploring options and in theory, dont see why the X5 jack wont work. If the scenario was reversed and I was using a jack intended for a lower weight car on a heavier car I would not even ask the question.

Nobody is going to know without having tried it themselves and I think you might not get too many replies.

Don't you know anyone with a floor jack that will let you borrow it? And get an old hockey puck.

You seem to have already made your decision. Do it, just don't get under the vehicle.

Scissor Jack's are crap and meant only to be used in an emergency. The one from my BMW a few years ago gave out when I jacked the car. Luckily I had jack stands under it.

I would invest in a proper jack. Not very expensive and much safer.

A quality scissor jack works fine! Used one all the time for my C6 as one of two jacks. Mine is very old and has a wide base. A big advantage of a scissor jack versus a small hydraulic jack is you don't have to watch carefully as it rolls into the car. If a hydraulic jack doesn't roll in, it can pull off the puck-not good. Don't ask how I know!

Believe if I had a metal puck and a jack shape that is designed to fit a spot welded seam, I'd use a piece of wood in-between. You're not jacking very high-but be careful. To be safe get a pair of jack stands from Harbor Freight for <$25, they don't take up much room.

Was looking for a quality scissor jack that had a low profile and high lift. Few made. Harbor Freight has a very cheap one but it took a lot of force to use-not really functional. Recently bought a long arm low profile hydraulic jack from Harbor Freight that fits my need but it weighs 90 pounds and takes up room!

Replaced my Old Scissor Jack I had used successfully with my C6 with a 2nd Harbor Freight hydraulic jack. PS: Recently bought a large hydraulic jack that has a much longer arm. It needs to move in only ~1 inch at the lift needed to put my stanchions under the wheels. This small jack was near max lift and had to move in ~2 1/2 inches to stay centered on the jack pad!
