I don't auto cross. I love road courses. Sometimes, while we are at the skid pad working on under/over steer we are using traffic cones to mark the course. I have always wondered... what happens if you Mac a cone going 60+? anything negative? Why don't we use little stubby cones that the car would drive over if we miss?
Depends a lot on the cone. Some are made out of a much thicker material and are very stiff. Of course the are often embedded with dirt and grime. The little soft rubber cones wouldn't hurt anything unless Murphy's Law goes into gear.
Depends on the cone the type of material it is made from, the angle you hit it and what part of the car hits it. Before they started installing Carbon Fiber Splitters and Side Skirts on the Vette with the advent of the C6ZR1 you couldn't do much damage to the cars as cones would leave scuff marks that could be polished out in a few minutes. Carbon Fiber splitters and side skirts are fragile and can't take much from anything. I saw one C6Z with the LG Carbon Fiber side skirts slide sideways into a cone with the result a side skirt shattered into what looked like a thousand parts.
However, a lot of time the cones get run over and trapped under the car where they get dragged for some distance. They look a lot worse for the wear when they come out. Some can't stand up any more. Then you get things like this:
