Dealer oil change, what oil did they really use?
RE: 2016 Stingray Base Coupe
I was reviewing my 500mi dealer oil change receipt recently, and I note the part list for the oil is: FP Number 12345885. . . . .Description OIL-ENGIN 8.800
Searching does not pull up much info, but what I did find is leading me to believe that the dealership filled the sump with ACDelco dexos1™ which may be a synthetic blend.
I specifically asked for Mobil1. (Now, I know about that Mobil1 is not considered a true synthetic, but it is, in my opinion, a better oil than products that are a mix of synthetic oil and dinosaur tears.)
Did I get Mobil1 or a Dexros1 blended oil? Can anyone familiar with dealer codes give me a definitive answer?

I have a dry sump, and asked the dealer to only fill w/ 9 qts. of Mobil 1 and provide me with the extra qt. to prevent overfilling, which can burp oil into the air intake. My invoice shows the same PN (12345885). The extra qt. of Mobil 1 was provided.
Now I suppose they could have filled it w/ 9 qts. of generic Dexos, and provided me w/ qt of Mobil 1, but I doubt it.
EDIT: I just checked the thread linked above and Mobil 1 is PN 12345885. In that same thread, generic Dexos has a different PN.

Do y'all really think a dealer would cheat you?

Just out of curiosity, does this 8.8 number indicate the amount of oil they used. If so, they most likely did not pull the sump plug as that will drain about 1 quart of oil while the other (almost 9 quarts) will come from the main plug/filter.

Somewhere, in amongst the 47 pages of this thread is your answer. Try about page 41.

Melting Slicks
A few months ago the parts manager at a trusted dealer told me GM was phasing out the GM Dexos blend and replacing it with a GM full-synthetic. She said their dealership had changed over last fall. If so, considering Exxon-Mobil is the source of GM oil, I would suspect the full-synthetic version is M1 or very similar. Would like to verify all this as true, though.

Melting Slicks
Ever since then I've just taken it to the dealer I think offers the lowest risk of damaging my car and the best chance of doing the job right. It's still a crap shoot, though, and once the freebies are over its DIY time again.

Safety Car
I have gone with my car at the dealer to watch the oil being changed to ensure they put mobile one in the car period I have done it three times. They wouldn't let me in the service Bay but they let me watch standing just outside. All three times I watched them put Mobil 1 in using quart jugs. If your dealer won't let you watch, tell them you're going to another dealer.

Double Dipping
Your dealer is double dipping you and GM. He is reimbursed at the Mobil 1 rate for the oil used during the complete care program.

My dealer uses either Mobil1 5W-30 or generic Dexos, from a pair of bulk tanks.
On our C6, I send a sample from each change to Blackstone, more from curiosity than any hope of financial savings.
One time, the properties came back somewhat out of wack, the oil had a fair amount of titanium but neither my LS3 3ngine nor Mobil1 have that in them. Blackstone said they thought I'd gotten a different oil, so I went in and "advised" the Service Manager of the situation. He seemed genuinely surprised, offered to drain some oil from the Mobil1 bulk tank, and he'd pay for an analysis. Which I did. End result, it looked like the Mobil1 bulk tank was about 2/3 Mobil1 and 1/3 generic Dexos. He offered me a free oil change also.
Best guess is that the dealer was honest, but the guy driving the bulk supply truck was either a crook or an idiot.

On the 1st 500 mile change they listed #12345885 and QTY 2 and OIL 8.800; and they also listed #88865165 and QTY 2, and OIL 8.800.
On the 2nd change they listed #88865165 and QTY 2 and OIL 8.800.
On both occasions I gave the head technician photo copies of the pages from the manual about Z06 oil changes and he said no problem with the Mobil 1, and confirmed it verbally with me when he gave me the keys.
I will bring both invoices with me Monday when I go for the 3rd change and see what is what. I am wondering if the part numbers refer to Mobil 1 in different size containers or something. And QTY of 2 has me baffled.

Had 2 "free" oil changes so far; one in Irvine, CA, the other in Houston, TX.
Both receipts show 1 quart of Mobil-1 and the rest as Dexos.
Did they put in Mobil-1? Yes
Was it ONLY Mobil-1? NO!
Do I want to argue with these guys....and then worry about some sort of sabotage or revenge trick that can't be traced back to them conclusively- No. I want that GM receipt in case of warranty. Yes, the engine can let loose anytime, but the more miles on it, the safer I feel about it going the distance.
Like another poster said....looking forward to doing it myself. At least I know what went in, and that a new filter went on, instead of wiping the outside of the old filter clean.
