I did this when replacing my console. Are you removing the boot as well? The boot has I believe it was 3 tabs on each side that you can softly use plastic trim remover to get free...be careful not to scratch and use a rag under it. The **** itself is tough but yes twist and pull....several here have thought it was going to break including myself but it won't....you have to pull way harder than you would think. I've done it twice....once for console then again for carbon fiber ****.
1.How far does the handle come up? - It comes all the way off if boot is removed as well
2.Does it stop when it reaches the point to twist? -you twist and pull at same time - it doesn't move until it just pops off.
3.Do you push the lock button while pulling up or not? - I did as its the only way to get enough pressure to pull up - you will think its going to break - many have said this but it'll be ok.

Reason: update
Finally got it. I found that is must be in Neutral. The wire plug release is on the back of the plug. They are so small they are very hard to get them to release.
Goes back together a whole lot easier.
Thanks for all the good advice to everyone who replied.
