Changed my air filter the other day
Although the procedure was more complicated than i think i should be for a normal maintenace item, it was still pretty easy, you do not have to remove the entire air cleaner housing. But to my surprise, the filter shows its country on manufacture....

Sorry, didn't take any pics but here is what i did:
1: remove the radiator air deflector, 4 7mm bolts, then it just pulls out quite easily.
2: removed the 2 PCV lines attached to the air assemply, simply squeeze the grey button and pull the lines off, they pop off quite easily.
3: un-do the screw clamps at the throttle body and the air cleaner ends
4: remove Mass Airflow sensor plug, pull up on the RED clip, then squeeze the button and it comes off easily.
5: pull off the plastic air ducts from each end, just to move it out of the way, you will need the space to the the airbox off.
6: un-screw with a TORX, the two top screws from the airbox ( where the air filter is housed, tilt back and pull out.
7: at this point the air filter can be removed. Some websites show you pulling our the whole airbox, this is not necessary.
Care must be taken when putting the air cleaner box back together, tilt it on an angle down so that the bottom goes in first and the little flange down there is under the air filter gasket, if you do it right, the airbox goes back in fairly nicely, no need to try to force it at all.
The key to all this is that everything pops off quite easily, if you are having difficultly in pulling anything apart, your doing something wrong.

And probably spend another 15 mins to put it all back.
Only challenge was to get that airbox cover back on, i stress that you gotta do that right in order to make sure it seals properly, spent 5 minutely playing with it until i could see how it connected at the bottom.
Yes, it feels good to know how to do all this stuff.
Plus i have a chance to clean up a few things in the engine bay that it could not get at to clean...

I used to do all maintenance on my cars myself. Now I am just too busy and I find myself not caring as much to be honest. It's more of a chore these days but I understand why people like doing it themselves.

DickieDoo, thanks for the little tips like how to tilt the air box to get it back together. The OM never let's one know about these tricks.

How dirty was it?

Did you think about replacing it with a K&N filter instead?!

Replaced it with an AIRAID ( synthamax tech ) which i believe is slightly better than K&N
Saw an interesting thing on filtration efficiency by actually testing the oil after you remove it from the crank. The K&N filter in the test showed quite well, so i have no issues with using a high-perf filter. It's oiled.
I will likely leave it in there for 2 seasons before i consider cleaning it.

I just ordered a K&N for my 16 Z-51 from Sumitt, during the checkout I was informed the filter was not Commie/Kalifornia compliant.

I thought the manual says to replace the air filter @ 37,500 miles?

Thanks for the instructions on how to do this.

I did mine and used this video as a good guide. Easy to follow the instructions, however the bottom drivers side 7 mm fastener holding the air extractor is a b*tch. I used a nut driver with flexible shaft for that one. My filter had about 7K miles on it and was not dirty at all.
