Friction on a tire (that produces wear) is a function of friction and heat which are themselves functions of surface area. A tire with MORE surface area stays cooler and has less friction per unit of surface area than a less wide tire. What makes the tires on a GS/Z06 wear faster is that they're made of softer rubber.

And if you replace them with a harder rubber tire the cars' handling probably suffers quite a bit, so what's the difference? The cars eat tires, period. Hey, all these sleds eat tires, but over many years of experience the more aggressive the wheel/tire setup, the quicker you fry the sneakers. I'll put all the hand wringing and teeth gnashing over this here right up there with 'I got 22,000 miles out of my Z51 run-flats'.

Whatever you boys say. It's the INTERNET.

It's really amazing how far someone will go to cling on to their erroneous beliefs, staring the certainty of their errors dead in the face.

I don't see why something that works for the President of the United States can't work for the rest of us.

Yeah, it is misleading.

I'm not too sure why they do this and don't list actual overall including the mirrors in addition to furthest points on the body. I guess they think it's irrelevant since you can fold them in.

Here is the GM site I was thinking of. Their GM fleet website says it correctly:

After some light googling, it appears the standard, maybe government imposed, around most of the world, is to quote widths without mirrors, although just to trick it up, there are some manufacturers that DO quote width with mirrors.

So for some official transport or fleet purpose they don't want mirrors but of course most end users are going to want to know the width with mirrors so some manuf do use it for them.

I think this is interesting and would like to know the "why" and the "origin" but I don't know how much time I want to spend on it....

OK, maybe I have to contain my inner troll here.

Disregard all my earlier posts regarding GS/Z06 tire wear and ride comfort, I take it all back.

As little as some people drive their Corvettes they probably actually need the tires to wear fairly quickly so they are not driving around on hardened old tires which can be unsafe. I am looking forward to wearing out the tires on my GS every year or two and replacing them with fresh new rubber. If they cost a few dollars more than Z51 size Michelins it is of no consequence to me.

If the GS goes through tires every 6K miles like my local acquaintance's Z06did, I'd be buying a $1600-$2000 set of high performance tires every year. Hoping the Z51 gets at least 12K miles per set - putting that money out every OTHER year would make a big difference. I will probably do like 6500-8500 miles annually.

Many people report getting more than 10K miles on their ZO6 tires. If I get less than that on my GS and have to buy tires once a year it will not bother me. Gas and tires are cheap. Taxes are expensive.

Tires are by no stretch cheap for cars like a GS or Z51. There are three things you can assume are grossly exaggerated when posted on the Internet: automobile mpgs, dick size, and tire life milage claims.
