Default Cluster reset during traffic

I have a 2014 C7 Stingray Z51 M7 and while in stop and go traffic 2 weeks ago, the cluster did a complete restart. The power didn't go off because my radar detector was still working (hardwired to the fuse box), and my phone was still charging through the car charger.

I was in 1st gear, rev match off, going around 5-10 mph and on occasion stopping briefly in traffic (brake pressed and clutch pressed in as well). The cluster turned off for about 30 seconds while i was moving at about 5 mph. I was still able to move and control the car and then it came back on going through the normal needle sweep and cluster display. I didn't take it into the dealer because I just ran out of my 3 year bumper to bumper warranty (expired as of Jan.). Plus i couldn't replicate the problem. Car has about 23k miles on it.

Any early first production 2014 owners run into this before, or anybody in general? Got me worried and now thinking about selling the car. The number 1 thing I hate, is electrical issues. Car only had an AFE intake when this happened. I just installed a Borla Atak and Corsa x-pipe last weekend (but that's irrelevant). Any thoughts/comments are appreciated. Sell the car? Should I report it to the dealer? Don't worry about it until it comes up again?

Chris

I have a 2015 and it did the same thing twice in past week. It was out in hot sun one of the times. Then it showed the attached as I was moving.

Wowsers!!! that's worst than what i experienced. Did you take it to the dealer? Any thoughts? Did your lights stay lit?

I'm thinking about driving around with a gopro in the cabin so i can capture it on video if it happens again.

Since you are only a few months out of warranty, I would call the dealer to see if an exception can be made. At a minimum, they could update your software. Other than 30-60 minutes of time, there are no other hard costs to the dealer for the update.

Good luck

I'd chalk it up to a "glitch". There is an amazing amount of processors/code in a car like the C7. Far more lines of code than are in Windows.

I recently had the airbag recall serviced. Would that ecu update be the same? My dealer is boardwalk chevy in redwood city, and you're right it doesn't hurt to ask them.

once in a while something goes awry on mine whether it be the infotainment system losing my pre-sets, my cluster changing, easy exit activating when I open the door or HUD changing info.......to put it simply, the electronics in the C7 are a cluster f'k of happenings. Thankfully these things all can be corrected with a press of a few buttons, it's more of an amusing annoyance than anything else.

When I had a Cadillac SRX it did that twice and both times randomly and never happened again in over 100K miles. I agree it's probably a glitch and will be very difficult to replicate at a dealer, unless you know what is causing it to occur.

I called over to my dealership and the corvette tech said it sounds like a glitch as well. He said even if i documented it on film nothing could really be done and it's not even worth bringing in because he'd have to charge me since i'm out of warranty. I tried for a courtesy diagnostics but he couldn't. He said if it happens again and i have it on film, i can always send my story to GM corporate. Pretty much if he can't replicate it, and there's not many other cases out there (he personally hasn't heard any other customers bring up this issue) kinda just have to continue on with life....i even tried to bring on the whole safety concern while driving, etc. and he couldn't suggest anything.

So now you're gonna lug around a film camera to capture this happening? 8 or 16mm film? Or are you going to go for the biggie: IMAX?

I've been lucky to not have experienced any electronic glitches thus far, but have seen them on periodically on various other late model vehicles. In the age of software-driven everything, this is just the new normal. Control-alt-delete, stop-program, shut-down and reboot, is just a way of life now.

On my '14, I've had one glitch. About two years ago or so,

I was accelerating on an on ramp, and noticed that even though I was in fourth (I always drive in M), the DIC said 2, I down shifted, and the number stayed the same, and then I upshifted, and it still said 2. Everything else on the DIC appeared to be working normally. It stayed this way for about 15 seconds. The entire DIC went black for a second or so, then went back to normal.

So far it has not repeated.

I just remembered I did have one glitch 6-8 months ago on my '14, which has never re-occurred.

When entering my driveway, I hit the garage door opener, and nothing happened. I pulled up in front the door, and hit the buttons for all 3 doors, nothing. Got out, and opened the door via house keypad, drove in and shut the car down and started trouble-shooting. No fuses were listed in the manual, and then I noticed courtesy lights and visor mirror lights were also out. No fuses were listed for those either. Everything else seemed to be working fine on the cluster and everywhere else.

I went into the house for about 10 minutes and returned, and noticed courtesy lights were back on. Hit the garage door buttons, and all worked again. I've never seen it again.

I think the BCM software just "hiccups" every so often.

Whiskers. Specifically whiskers on PCB's. Solder grows whiskers. When two whiskers from different circuits meet, Puff the magic dragon smoke is released and the pcb dies.

it's not the glitch that is gonna get you, it's the obsolescence. My brother is buying up C5 hvac control panels on ebay that the owner(s) claim to be working. (he has 2 c5's and 2 c6's) if a c5 climate controller dies in your vette, GM cannot supply a replacement controller any longer. Looks like 10 years is going to be the GM support window for their cars, and electronics die sooner than mechanical linkages. Those damn whiskers.

I had similar issue recently where first middle screen reboots and 30 seconds later the dash reboots. The link below identified the culprit and after getting the FW reflashed I haven't had any recurrences.

My 2015 just did the same exact thing. Any idea what's going on?

My bother has a 2015 11,500 miles he bought new. His cluster went completely out. he took it to the dealership where he bought it, they said they would have to replace the cluster at a cost of $1,000 before they could even begin to diagnose the problem. does anybody have information about this?

That doesn't make sense. Maybe he didn't hear them correctly. Replacing the cluster is per se making a diagnosis. Maybe there is some technical guidance from GM that says if this shows up do this. Small electronic repair shops subscribe to guides like that so it takes a lot less time to repair an item when somebody brings it in the door.

Quick question- how old is you battery? In stop and go traffic, the battery might not be getting a “charge” from the system due to the low rpm’s. If the battery drop below a certain voltage level, the electronics will reboot in some cases.

Welcome to the wonderful world of electronic... well, everything vehicles! You are as likely to never see the issue again as to see it next drive. Unfortunately, only the Quantum Gods know which.
