I went out to dinner last nite and took my C7 in the 81 degree temp outside per my cell phone. The car read 67 degrees and I figured it would change as I drove. We reached the restaurant in 10 minutes, it read 68. After dinner I get back in the car and it is still reads 68 degrees and I drive for 10 minutes at 68 and then it goes to 69,70, 71... and took about a minute to reach 80 which was the correct temp.
Not that this is a big problem, but something didn't work as designed and I am curious what happened. I have not driven my car since last nite so I do not know if it is a one time thing but even if it is OK something happened and I am curious if anyone else experienced a similar thing.
To avoid false high readings due to retained heat in the engine compartment most cars won't update the temperature higher for a short time if it has been only shut off for a few hours since the last drive. If the sensor reads a dropping temperature then it will update rapidly. 10 minutes seems unusually long but I haven't paid that much attention to my Z06. My 2014 ATS usually provides a correct update within about 5 minutes of a restart.
It did, in fact, work as designed. NSC5 is correct. If I recall correctly, the Corvette also takes speed into account. It won't update to higher temps until you get to 35 MPH. This was frequently discussed in the C6 forum and I imagine the same algorithm is used in the C7.

wait till it tells you its minus 40f out, I have a recurring occasional problem with this, been reflashed twice at the dealership for it, next step will prob be to replace the sensor when I get annoyed with it enough to pursue it.
Both the C5 I had and my C6 has that feature(does not want to show actual temp for a long, long time). My Mercedes gives me the ambient temp as soon as I turn the key---no delay. I can start the car after sitting in the garage for days, and it will immediately show the actual temp in the garage, and after I back out of the garage, it will then show the actual temp outside within a few seconds. It might go from 48 degrees(in the garage) to 80 degrees out in the sun, within seconds.
Or I can drive the car in hot weather, shut it down for 30 minutes, get back in the car and take off and it will show the actual ambient temp within seconds.
I don't understand why GM's system can't function that way.
.........if a negative concern worthy of a thread is based on concerns about reading the outside temp you've got one heck of a car....I remember genuflecting with glee when some of my previous cars would start and stop....good times
