Wife leaves this morning comes back in says she is getting a no FOB detected message. So it won't start. Mr Fixit is he up to the challenge? Got the 2nd FOB and off she went. He is. Assume the battery is dead in #1? Built 12-10-13 so 3+ years. Our C6 was 8 years old when it left and never replaced the batteries. My F150 is 10 with the OEM's in the FOB.
It's always a good idea to change batteries after a few years, just as a matter of preventative maintenance. Cost is what -- $4? $4 and 3 minutes work to change it every few years doesn't seem that burdensome.
However, there may be an alternate explanation:
If this was a 1-time event, it could have been the fob's proximity to her cell phone, or other electronic device.
For example: sometimes, if I have the fob in the same pocket as my cell phone, it can't be detected. Remove cell phone or fob from pocket -- presto -- fob is recognized.
So my key fob being this wqs my spare slipped out the key socket while i was going home and didnt realize till the next morning.
Next morning I was super lucky to find it on the street but it was friggin battered and it was wet. I quicky put it in a bucket of rice and let it sit till i went home.
When i came home i pressed the buttons and the car lights up. Woohoo! The next day I tried to take the car out but the fob wasnt working. Opened it fidget with it and still no luck.
Went to rite aid and bought 4 new 2032 batteries replaced it and it worked! By now i thought ok this was the end of it. Next morning again the fob didnt work! Replaced another battery and once again it worked again. No idea wth was the problem but it seems like the battery dies every 30 minutes or something. When i replace the battery with a old battery it would miraculously work too.
I am still stumped till this day but i did bring in the keyfob to the dealership and without question he ordered me a new one under warranty which i didnt expect that keyfobs were under warranty. Pleasant surprise
Kind of a related question, will it hurt anything to keep the fob in the slot under the column when driving? Will it kill the battery in the fob or cause any other issues? Just curious as this seems like a convenient place to put the fob instead of my pocket when driving the car.

You can take the battery out of the FOB, put the FOB in the slot and drive away. It won't hurt if the battery is perfect and you put the FOB in the slot.
HOWEVER....
It is best to just keep the FOB in your pocket or purse (depending on how you identify for the day) and go about your day!
My FOB for my 14, at 3 years an 1 month started to fail. At first it would not let me just walk up and open the door, had to press the Fob button. A few days latter wouldn't work at all. Went and got my wife's FOB, and I had to press the button for the door to unlock. Drove to store and got new batteries for both FOBs. Every thing worked correctly after.
This is the first car I have had where the FOB goes dead even if it is not being used.
My FOB went dead, and when I went to use the second FOB that had never been used, it was also dead.
Both lasted 3 years (April, 2014)
You will usually get a few FOB not detected messages while driving and that might be a good time to get some batteries ready and keep them in the glove box....
These fobs are continuously transmitting unlike the C6. Mine began to die less than 3 years. DIC said "service push button start system". Replaced battery. All is good.

No, these are not continuously transmitting. They work exactly the same way as the C6 fobs. The fob never quests.
They are only active (transmit) when a button on either the car or the fob is pressed, or when exiting (door opening and closing), and the car quests to see if a fob is still in the car.
Sounds like the battery died. Remember the emergency start slot on the steering post, place the fob in it and the engine should start.
Checked battery when I had occasional difficulty opening the car. It read just in the "Good" range. Still had issues, then one day soon after the no FOB warning. used the slot and bought a new battery that read fully in the "Good" range on a meter that loads the batteries and has work very well for years. All was fine.

Has to be doing something different. These batteries have a 10 year shelf life. An unused fob would not kill a battery in 3 years. Not to argue, just that something drags them down quicker. Maybe just electronic drain.

Many things can affect fob battery life. A lot depends on how passively or actively you use your fob. Do you lock or unlock the car or pop the trunk with the fob, or do you use auto lock/passive entry? Do you lower the convertible top with the fob or remote start the car?
It could be something as simple as a sticky button that activates the fob regularly.
