Actually, the charge is $399 per year. Seems to me that Photobucket has just signed their own death warrant.

I just keep my phones on my own machine. Why do I need another service?

Until about 3 years ago, CorvetteForum did not host photos. So, you needed a way to post photos and Photobucket served that purpose nicely (until a few days ago). There are still many forums that do not host photos on their sites. Not many users want to setup their home computer as a server.

defaria.com exists as an OpenStack instance at DreamCompute. Been running my server since 1998! My bill from DreamCompute works out to be less than $5/month.

How about when they start charging for bandwidth:

How long will bandwidth be free?
For a limited time, upload and download bandwidth from virtual machines will not be included in your monthly bills. We have not decided when to end this special offer; once we decide, we will notify customers with plenty of advance.

How much will bandwidth cost?
Upload traffic will be free, only download bandwidth will be charged. Details are still being defined and will be in line with DreamHost’s other products.

From https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/...ling-overview:

How is my monthly download bandwidth calculated?
Download bandwidth is calculated based on metered data transferred out of DreamObjects. Similar to storage, download bandwidth is stored in bytes. The aggregate number of bytes downloaded is converted to GB and then multiplied by the download rate of 5¢ per GB.

There is no charge for uploading data into DreamObjects.
From my last email about billing:

Account: Andrew DeFaria

balance: $4.50 (charges through today)
due: $4.50 (charges through your last rebill)

Hello Andrew,

We have deferred billing for the time being on your account with DreamHost. You currently have a balance due of $4.50, but we don't rebill for amounts smaller than $5.50!

Keep in mind that your next bill will include this amount due ($4.50) in addition to any new charges you've incurred.
I've been using this since 12/2013 and my bill (bandwidth included) seems to run $4.50 every month ($54/year). I run two domains there - defaria.com (which I also run my email server from) and clearscm.com which is my corporate site.

Prior to 12/2013 I housed my server in my apartment which meant every time I moved my server and email were down until I set up at the new place. Additionally, to serve from your house you need a static IP which generally puts you into "business class" service. While business class does have better service you pay for it! Plus you don't get great speeds unless you pay even more. I typically had download speeds of around 5-15Mbps. One ISP charged $25 each and every month for the privilege of having a static IP (which is only a one time addition to a DNS zone file!). Often my ISP bill was ~$75-$150 depending on the ISP's plan. So I'd say, yeah, give me OpenStack instance and charge me $54/year, great speed and I don't have to take it down each time I move and I can get my own, consumer grade internet getting like 150Mbps download speeds for ~$75/month.
