Default Radar Detector

I'm looking for a radar detector that does not require mounting either on the dash or rear view mirror. I would like one that can be installed out of sight with the sensor located behind the front grill.

Years ago a friend had an Old's 88 (okay it was a long time ago) and I recall that his was installed as described above.

Any input would be appreciated.

Max 360 CI. Get ready to have a stroke when you hear how much it costs. Then add a couple grand for installation. Unless you live in a anti-state like Virginia, you will quickly be back looking at the much cheaper mirror mount units.

I have the max 360 and I like it. I had the model below it before but someone broke into my car and stole it. The ones that mount in the front of your car are expensive and usually are jammers not a detector. When I was looking at reviews many people went from the ones that mounted in the front to ones to put inside the car. You can have it hang from your rear view and wired so it doesn't have the cord dangling in annoyance.

Back in the day I had a local guy who did car stereo installations, and he would take an Escort radar detector (the big one, back in the 80's) and remote it. He'd take the sensor out of the circuit board and build a remote housing for it, mount that in the grill and then mount the faceplate in the dash. I wish I had a picture of it (this was back in the day before digital cameras). It cost me a bunch of money, but it was a super clean installation. No reason why you couldn't do the same thing today, but you'd need to know what you're doing and the odds of it working are probably lower now with the miniaturization of everything electronic.

I think there are several companies that make remote sensor units, but they typically only sell them to professional installers, so you're looking at thousands for the setup. As Flame Red mentioned, after shopping you'll likely just get a conventional unit and stick it on your windshield like everyone else does.

I use an 8500-X50 (I know-I know, but its served well) mounted using a bracket from IIRC Great Lakes Trophy. (http://www.greatlakestrophies.com/)
Removing r/h visor arm mounting screw, replace screw thru both bracket & visor hole, tighten & voila'.
Nearly invisible from outside looking in.

RD power's via a DashTronics & for those unfamiliar w/ DT this contraption, it plugs into OBDII port projecting detector's alert onto HUD. Line from DTs to RD is fished under trim to detector & switched w/ ignition.

After getting a ticket due to Marshall Tucker blasting, drowning-out detector's alert/alarm I wanted something more. Idea being can't hear it? Then, see it.

I don't believe DT's made anymore, but they were slick for this app.
GLT still markets this very inexpensive bracket (~$22) for C6, a little fabricating might make it work w/ C7.
A call to GLT w/could answer the question re compatibility.
