I have noticed another problem that probably only happens in extreme hot weather. I have the switched extension cord with mine. I believe the Range does not allow the gas vapor collection system to work. I can begin to small gas and then I turn the Range off and the smell goes away. Then I turn the Range back on. This only happens when the temperature is over 100.
I thought the vapor collection was a passive system that requires no power. If this is the case the use of a Range should have no effect. Am I wrong?
The system on the C7 may be different but other ones I am familiar with would not be affected by the Range module and if it was it would set a CEL. Vapor from the tank is stored in a charcoal filled cannister and when the engine operating conditions are right the ECM commands the purge and vent valves to open; the purge valve creates a path between the vapor storage cannister and the intake manifold while the vent valve opens to allow fresh air to be pulled into the cannister so that the vapors can flow through the purge valve.
This system is sensitive and if there is flow when there should not be (stuck open purge valve), no flow when there should be (stuck closed purge valve or vent valve), or loss of tank vacuum (stuck open vent valve) one or more DTCs will be set and the CEL will come on. I went through a painful process with this when my 2014 ATS was new because it came with a damaged charcoal cannister which caused charcoal particles to cause the purge valve to stick. It took four trips to the dealer in the first 500 miles to cure this simple issue which is one reason I chuckle when people call for Corvette to be sold via the Cadillac division in order to have better service.
If you are smelling fuel you may well have a leak at the top of the fuel tank which has affected several people. For it to come from the evaporative emission system either the cannister or a line has a fault or the vent valve is stuck open which would definitely set a DTC. I would get it to the dealer since raw gas fumes are nothing to fool around with; also do a search for fuel leaks in this forum and you will find some of the issues others have experienced.
