i m not a techie by any means, i have Waze on my android, if i open AA waze will connect automaticly ? i haven t opened it for awhile, not much in there, only a options to open something, g maps, and tunes on my phone is about it. Am i missing something ?
What is this "Android Media Apps"? Is that a specific one thing that can be gotten from the Play Store, or are you referring to some media apps, generally?
General category. There are quite a number of audio apps that run under Android Auto. I use MD Player for locally stored tunes and PocketCast for well, podcasts like news, articles and stories. There are many more.

Android Auto handles phone and SMS, media apps, navigation. So far the only nav apps are Google Maps and Waze. They really need to combine those two. AA also integrates the apps with google based voice control.

Yes you are missing something.
Assuming you've run AA and have at some time changed media apps, it works similarly for mapping apps of which this is Google Maps and now Waze. Like the media apps you first hit the directions button twice. You should see a screen that allows you to choose which mapping app. Select it and your all set.
This is incorrect. Waze runs on the big screen too!
He has a 2015 MY. He has no access to AA or Apple Carplay.
Defaria you actually posted this yourself a while back"
"It's pretty simple guys. Unless you have a C7 2016 or later you lack the hardware to run AA and display it on the big screen. If you have a C7 2016 then you may need to go into the dealer to have your firmware updated to support AA. If you have a 2017 I think the firmware is already updated.
Other than that, what Google has just done is make a UI for AA on the phone the mimics the UI you would see on the big screen had you had a newer C7 with the required hardware. You can mount your phone (I recommend a ProClip) and use that as your "nav" by running the AA app on your phone."

Ok. Will try again, tried an hour ago and only have the 4 options on the bottom of the screen . Will hit it twice.

i tried it a couple times last night again, dbl click, i hit the bent arrow on the bottom left twice, and still came up google. For some reason, i don t get a lot of options, map, music, back to gm or something and one other one, i was under impression it showed everything on the screen as your phone, but i am mistaken.
I got it to work last night. After selecting Android Auto for display (Projection), go into the maps / navigation function (Google Maps is defaulted). There are five "buttons" at the bottom and the left most one is navigation (Notice the small options arrow). Hit that button once and it will allow you to select "Google Maps" or "Waze" for your navigation. Of course, you need to have the Waze APP installed on your phone and the latest firmware for this option to be available (2016 + vehicles).
*oops. Instructions were already provided on post #12.
I have a 7" nexus tablet that I could then use to attach to my hotspot or iphone to get map updates. Just would need to stow the tablet somewhere. I don't want Apple maps to navigate me into a lake.
Apple maps is also super aggressive about trying to find you a faster route. That would be great if it didn't suck at it. Last time I did what it told me, it took a 1 hour drive and turned it into almost 2.
Do I need to download anything or will it be there when I go out in my car now?
You need the Waze app installed on your phone. As long as you have the App, android auto (May need to update Android auto on your phone as well) will make it available.
OK, I'm still confused. Do you mean Waze is only available outside of Android Auto if not connected to a car or do you mean I should be able to select Waze within Android Auto on my phone? If it is the latter, how do I do it? I've updated Waze and my Android Auto version is the latest. However, I can't find any option to select Waze as my mapping program within Android Auto on my phone.
Thanks

That was a good question. I have the option for Waze or Maps when I have the phone plugged into my car and select Android Auto from the infortainment display. But if I don't have the car plugged into the car and open AA on my phone I don't have the option drop down arrow for selecting maps or waze. So I guess I have to assume it only works with the infotaiment system if you have the phone plugged into the usb port in the car and click on Android Auto on the infotainment screen display.
It doesn't work with 2014 and 2015 model years. I know that for sure.
